MISSION STATEMENT
ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills contributing to effective learning within the school. CAREER DEVELOPMENT Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self, and make informed career decisions PERSONAL & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.
The mission of the White Plains school counseling program is to support all facets of the educational environment as advocates for the students. We strive to provide all students with the services fundamental to academic, career, college, and interpersonal decision-making. The goal of our program is to implement all domains of the American School Counselor Association model-academic, personal/social and college/career. As advocates for all students, we create equity within the school and assist students in overcoming obstacles and barriers that might impede learning and personal growth. We assist students in acquiring the knowledge and resources needed for postsecondary success. We promote a commitment to life-long learning for our students as they develop to their fullest potential.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNSELOR?
School counselors are professionals and educators with a minimum of a Masters Degree who work in elementary, middle and high schools. School counselors provide academic, career, college access for students K12 through interventions, which include annual planning through individual counseling, group counseling, and curriculum lesson plans.
How Can Parents and Family Members Help Their Child Succeed?
Encourage learning in and out of school. Provide classroom guidance, relating to academic skills support, organizational, study and test-taking skills. Discuss substance abuse, coping strategies, multicultural awareness, peer relationships and effective social skills. Individual counseling related to personal, academic, college, and career Student planning in relation to goal setting, academic plans, problem solving, and transition from secondary to post-secondary schools and career. Facilitate career planning, career awareness and the world of work. Get to know your childs teachers and counselors, and maintain good communication with all educators. Participate in school activities and show an interest in the school. Be enthusiastic!! Celebrate your childs successes and help motivate your child! Listen. When your child is frustrated with homework, encourage him/her to break down the problems into smaller, manageable steps. Encourage independent growth and learning. Let your child pursue activities and academics that interest them. Set a consistent schedule routine for homework extracurricular activities. and and SCHOOL COUNSELORS... Assist parents in understanding their childs educational progress. Choose appropriate strategies for motivating their children. Aid parents and their children develop realistic and obtainable short and long term educational goals. Assist in the exploration of college and career options. Offer resources relating to financial aid and the college admission process Discussions on the childs peer relationships and relationships at home within the family
