E: What’s up my girl how are you doing?
N: Hiii! I’m fine, totally fine. And you guys?
M&E: Yeah, everything good except ‘final is coming’.
N: yeah, I know. I’m so tired. Can’t wait for the summer. I'm
looking to buy a new outfit to go out with my family this
summer. They said they would take me on a trip to Paris. I think
it's going to be really fun. It must be really cold out there, so I
have to look for a new coat and a few clothes.
M: wow! what a great vacation.
N: Can you guys help me choose which one is better?
E: Of course! Let me see. Uhh… you going to buy on SHEIN.
Haha seriously?
N: Why not? I think this brand makes good looking clothes. and
very affordable price So I thought I'd buy this brand. Can you
guys help me think about which ones are good.
E: bro... but it’s fast fashion.
N: fast fashion? What is fast fashion? I’m literally not even heard
about this before.
E: Alright. Let me tell you. The word “fast fashion” refers to
‘cheaply produced and priced garments that copy the latest
catwalk styles and get pumped quickly trough stores in order to
maximize on current trends. It means that they sell the product
with cheap prices and also cheap quality.
N: ahh I got it. But honestly, I still don’t think it’s that bad. I
think it's nice to have new clothing or collections every season.
So that it doesn't become outdated. Some brands have waited so
long to release clothes that I don't even want to buy them
anymore.
E: Alright girl. Let me tell you more about this. And why is it so
bad? Let me explain it to you. Because they are not just selling
products. The design of the product they sell comes from other
companies so that means they’re copying someone else’s
products and cut the price by selling cheaper than the original.
N: what?! How could they do that?
E: I know right! Easy, first of all they have a big factory and a
lot of production capacity which can pumped up a lot of products
and can get a lower cost. So, they can sell it lower than market
price.
Otherwise, this is some examples from BBC (ขึ้นรู ปข่าว) that
they use illegal labor and pay them lower than it should be.
N: oh no…
E: And this is what will happen if you, no not only you but
everyone still purchasing from this kind of company. Because of
their cheap quality make it very easy to be ripped and you have
to throw it away, then become a trash.
N: But I saw the company also has a campaign to encourage
consumers to recycle their clothes.
E: well, unfortunately you can’t. Because of that poor quality of
product, you can’t even use it anymore how could you possibly
get to recycle it? So, the only thing you can do is throw it away.
N: Oh my gosh, is it really that bad? I had no idea it would have
such an impact. I probably won't buy SHEIN anymore, are there
any brands I should avoid more? I don't want to be the person
who supports companies that oppress their workers or employees
like that.
M: there are a lot of fast-fashion brands nowadays and the worst
part is that most people doesn’t even know they just buy
one! Yes, just like you. For the example of well-known fast
fashion brands in 2023, h&m, shein, uniqlo, zara and forever 21.
These are the clothes store that very popular and some of them
has a lot of shop stores around the world. Especially shein, shein
is so popular among teenagers these days. Many people buy
without knowing that it’s a fast fashion but now you know! fast
fashion issues are not only happened with clothes industry but
also an issue with cosmetics industry, that’s called fast beauty.
Fast beauty is as effective to the ecosystem as fast fashion.
N: I probably won't be able to find any nice clothes to wear on
this trip. Do you guys have any clothing brands you recommend
that aren't fast fashion? I want beautiful clothes. I'm serious about
being modern and beautiful.
M: don’t worry! There are a lot of eco-friendly brands that you
haven’t discover yet. And I swear that some of them are so much
prettier and more practical than the one you always buy. I want
to suggest you ‘BNK Brand’ their clothes are felt like timeless
style. And they are running by Thai designer. It’s must be better
to support Thai local brand, right? Some of them may look
simple but in long term you can easily match them with your
other clothes.
N: i totally love it. What about something that i can wear in my
daily life?
M: nice question. This brand is also Thai brand by famous Thai
influencer ‘blinkky’. Triplebshop. This brand has a lot of Korean
and feminine style clothes. If you are a fan of ZARA this brand
must be your new favorite shop!
N: any brand to recommend?
M: for your alternative choice. These are Thai local and eco-
friendly brand you may interest. Dry Clean Only, Renim Project,
T AND T Bangkok and greyhound
N: Very interesting, but I think some brands are too expensive. I
don't have money to buy it. Do you have any inexpensive brands
to recommend?
M: I have a solution for you. These days secondhand shopping is
become so popular. The seller will sell their clothes that they are
not often wear or never wear it in lower price. I think this is a
nice way to buy more clothes in low cost.
N: Second-hand clothes? I'm afraid it's not safe. My skin is very
sensitive. If so, do you have any cleaning methods?
M: I think this may help you with it! This is a several ways to
clean your secondhand clothes.
• First way is to wash it with hot water. After you wash it in your
normal washing way. Use hot water and soak it for about 15
minutes and then hang it outside in the place that has a nice
sunlight and air flow. High temperature water will kill the germs
that come with your clothes.
• Second way is baking soda. This way will help you when your
clothes has a stain. Just put it on your stain and then wash it
again. Your clothes will be cleaned like new!
• Last way is vinegar. Mix vinegar and water in the ratio of 1:5.
Vinegar will help reduce the smell of musty.
N: That sounds great. I'll think about what you guys suggest. I'll
finally have some nice clothes to wear on my trip this summer
that don't require me to support those fast fashion brands. It can
help both prevent the world from pollution and do not support
