Assignment Activity Unit 5

Key Components of Reflective Writing

Reflective writing is a personal response that involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, and
learning experiences to gain self-knowledge and a deeper understanding of the subject matter
(UNSW, 2023).Reflective writing is more than just describing past events; it's about
understanding and learning from experiences. Key components include self-awareness,
critical thinking, organization, supporting evidence, and reflection.

Self-awareness is the foundation. It's about understanding your emotions, thoughts, and
experiences. This self-exploration allows you to see how these elements shape your actions
and decisions.

Critical thinking is essential for analyzing your experiences. It involves questioning

assumptions, exploring different perspectives, and making connections between ideas. This
analytical process deepens your understanding of the situation.

Organization is key to presenting your thoughts clearly. A well-structured reflection guides

the reader through your thought process. It helps to maintain focus and coherence.

Supporting evidence strengthens your reflection. Examples, details, and specific references
make your writing more credible and convincing. It helps illustrate your points effectively.

Reflection is the heart of the process. It involves connecting past experiences to future
actions. By looking back and analyzing your experiences, you can identify lessons learned
and apply them to new situations.

These components work together to create a meaningful and insightful reflection. By

combining self-awareness, critical thinking, organization, supporting evidence, and
reflection, you can craft a powerful piece of writing that showcases your growth and learning.

Reflective essay: Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is important in my life, especially as a stay-at-home mom. I handle

many tasks, from house chores to taking care of my kids. Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed, but
knowing my emotions helps me stay calm. For example, when my kids are demanding, I take
a moment to breathe and recognize my frustration. This self-awareness helps me respond
more patiently.

In my old job as a sales executive at a shoe shop, emotional intelligence was key. I had to
manage my emotions and understand my customers' feelings. By empathizing with them, I
provided better service and built strong relationships. This skill also helps in my studies at the
University of the People (UoPeople). Emotional intelligence and critical thinking help me
analyze situations and make good decisions, whether for my coursework or daily life.

To discuss emotional intelligence, I will focus on its main parts: self-awareness, self-
regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. I will structure my essay by talking about
each part with my personal experiences. This will show how emotional intelligence affects
different areas of my life.

Research shows that high emotional intelligence leads to better job performance, improved
relationships, and overall well-being. For example, Goleman (1995) found that people with
high emotional intelligence are more successful. In my life, being emotionally intelligent
helps me handle motherhood, keep good family relationships, and do well in my studies.

My understanding of emotional intelligence has grown over time. At first, I thought it was
just about managing emotions, but it is more than that. It includes understanding others'
emotions, building strong relationships, and making thoughtful decisions. To improve my
emotional intelligence, I practice mindfulness, seek feedback, and reflect on my experiences.
These steps make me more resilient and adaptable.

In conclusion, emotional intelligence is a vital skill in my life. From managing the demands
of being a stay-at-home mom to excelling in my studies and previous job, it helps me face
challenges with grace. By continuing to develop this skill, I hope to grow even more
personally and professionally.
