Security Mechanisms, Fundamental security design principles, attack surfaces and attack
trees, A Model for Network Security, Classical Encryption techniques- Symmetric cipher
model, Substitution techniques.

Unit:2: Block Ciphers and the Data Encryption Standard 08 Hours


Traditional block cipher structure, The data encryption standard, A DES Example, The strength
of DES, Block cipher design principles, Public-key cryptography and RSA- Principles of public-
key cryptosystems, The RSA algorithm, other public-key cryptosystems-Diffie-Hellman key
