Gour Govinda Swami was born as Braja Bandhu Manik
on the second of September 1929 in Jagannathpur, a
small village near to Jagannath Puri, Orissa. In his youth
he mostly lived with his maternal family the Giris in the
village of Gadeigiri. The Giris were Gaudiya Vaishnavas
and well known for their expertise in kértana.
As a boy Braja Bandhu was very quiet and serious.
Whatever free time he had from his studies he spent
rendering services to the family deity of Gopal Jiu and
accompanying his grandfather and uncles in going
from village to village, chanting hari-näma and singing
songs of the vaiñëava äcäryas. He was very attached
to Çrémad Bhägavatam. As a young boy, his mother
found that whenever he would cry she need only place
the Bhägavatam in his hands and he would stop. At
night Braja Bandhu would go to sleep with the book
clutched to his chest.
In April of 1974, he left family life and adopted the name
“Gour Gopal” — Gour for Gauranga Mahaprabhu and
Gopal after his beloved childhood deity. Taking up the
lifestyle of a mendicant sadhu, Gour Gopal set out to
find a spiritual master who could teach him about the
hare kåñëa mahä-mantra, Çrémad Bhägavatam and Sri
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. His search took him all over
India. Finally in September of the same year, he resolved to Gour Govinda Maharaja began accepting disciples.

“In Choti village there is a religious house, to which
was granted, by my predecessors, a holding of
rent-free land. The head of the institution gave up
entirely entertaining such men as chanced to seek
shelter on a rainy night. This came to my notice,
and I administered a severe threat to the head
of the house, warning him that his lands would
be cruelly resumed if in the future complaints of
inhospitality were brought to my knowledge.”
— Srila Thakur Bhaktivinode in Maths of Orissa.
The author, Dr. Fakir Mohan Das grew up singing
the songs of Thakur Bhaktivinode in a Gaudiya
Vaishnava family in Orissa. He has dedicated his life to
researching the lives of Bhaktivinode Thakur and other
saints of Orissa. He has served as professor of Sanskrit
at Baripada Government Sanskrit College and as senior
lecturer in the Post Graduate Department of Oriya,
Utkal University. In 1999 he rediscovered the original,
lost deities of Radha Madhava worshiped in the family
of Thakur Bhaktivinode for over five hundred years.

“Çré kåñëa-kathä” means those beautiful, topmost,
transcendentally valuable words that are all-
attractive because they pertain to topics of the
beloved son of the king of Vraja”.
However, such topics are not just çré kåñëa-
kathä, they are çré kåñëa-kathä-amåta.
“Amåta” means “nectar”, or “something
very tasty”. Another meaning comes from the
word, “måtyu”, death. Adding the prefix “a-”
in front of “måtyu” it becomes “amåta”, or
“that nectar which frees one from birth, old
age, disease and death”.
“Bindu” means drop. This magazine is called
“Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu” because it is
just a drop of the nectarean ocean of ecstatic
topics of Sri Krishna.
