Step 1: Replace each letter in the


expression with the assigned value
Step 2: Perform the operations in
the expression using the correct
order of operations.

Evaluate: 𝑔 𝑥 = 3𝑥 2 + 7, 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑔(3)

Solution: 𝑔 𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 7

𝑔 3 = 3(3) + 7 Substitute

𝑔 3 =3 9 +7 Operate

𝑔 3 = 27 + 7
𝑔 3 = 34

Example 2:
Evaluate: f 𝑥 = 5𝑥 + 1, 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓(ℎ + 1)
Solution: f
𝑥 = 5𝑥 + 1
Substitute
f ℎ+1 = 5(ℎ + 1) +1
f ℎ+1 = (5ℎ + 5) + 1 Operate

f ℎ+1 = 5ℎ + 5 + 1
f ℎ+1 = 5ℎ + 6
Example 3:
Evaluate: g 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 2, 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 g(9)
Solution: g 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 2
g 9 = 3 9 −2 Substitute

g 9 = 27 − 2 Operate
g 9 = 25
g 9 = ±5
Example 4:

Evaluate: f 𝑥 = 2 , 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓

Substitute ℎ 2.4 = 2.4 + 2
ℎ 2.4 = 2 + 2 Operate

Difference quotient
