THE CONCEPT OF THE ALPHANUMERIC KEYS
The term alphanumeric refers to either letters or numbers, but not symbols or command keys. An alphanumeric
keyboard is a device with many keys (usually marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numerical digits, and
various extra keys). Alphanumeric keys include all the letters and numbers on the keyboard (A – Z and 0 – 9). The
number keys are located in two different spots on the keyboard: above the letters and to the right of the letters. The
number keys located directly above the letters double as symbol keys. Pressing shift and holding down a number
will type whatever symbol is also on that number key. Symbol keys include the percentage sign (%), @, #, ^, &, *
and ( ).
The letter keys are set up the same way from keyboard to keyboard. On the top row, the letters Q, W, E, R, T and Y
are lined up.
THE KEYBOARD ROWS
1. Upper Row: This row of key is located at the top of the keyboard, but below the function keys. It consists of
numerical keys (0 – 9) and special characters or symbols such as @, #, !, &, % and ( ).
2. Top Row: The top row of the keyboard consists of 10 keys: Q,W,E,R and T for the left hand, and Y,U,I,O and
P keys for the right hand.
3. Home Row Keys: The home row refers to keys on the keyboard which your fingers rest on when you are
typing. The home row keys are A, S, D, and F (for the left hand) and J, K, L and ; (for the right hand).
4. Bottom Row Keys: The bottom row refers to keys found below the home row keys on a computer keyboard.
The bottom row keys are Z, X, C, V and V (for the left hand) and N, M, comma (,), period (.), and forward
slash keys (for the right hand).

THE CONCEPT OF THE HOME ROW KEYS
The home row is a key concept in typing. The home row is that middle horizontal row of the keyboard that starts
with A and goes all the way across. The idea behind the home row is that each finger remains in light contact with a
particular key there when it is not typing in order to keep “grounded”, providing a reference point for every other
key.

There are “home keys” for each of your eight (8) fingers.
