Test 2 TFP260S 27/09/2021

Question 1 [15]

Liquefied natural gas, LNG, is to be shipped from the Alaskan Kenai Peninsula by an
ocean carrier to processing plant on Yaquina Bay, Oregon. The molar composition of the
commercial LNG is

LNG composition mol % Mw (g/mol)

Methane, CH4 93.5 16
Ethane, C2H6 4.6 30
Propane, C5H8 1.2 44
Carbon dioxide, CO2 0.7 44

Determine

a) The weight fraction of ethane (7)

b) The average molecular weight of the LNG mixture (2)
c) The density of the gas mixture when heated to 207 K and at 1.4 x105 Pa (2)
d) The partial pressure of methane when the total pressure is 1.4 x105 Pa (2)
e) The mass fraction of carbon dioxide in parts per million by weight (2)

Question 2 [13]

Ammonia gas is diffusing through N2 under steady state conditions with N2 nondiffusing
since it is insoluble in one boundary. The total pressure is 0.1013 MPa and the
temperature is 298 K. The partial pressure of NH3 at one point is 13.33 kPa and at the
other point 25 mm away it is 6.666 x 103 Pa. The DAB for the mixture at 1.013 x 105 Pa
and 298 K is 2.30 x 10-5 m2/s.

a) Calculate the flux of NH3 in kgmol/s.m2

b) Assuming that N2 also diffuses (i.e., both boundaries are permeable to both gases
and the flux is equimolar counter diffusion, under the same conditions as in
question(a), determine the flux of NH3 in kgmol/s.m2

Question 3 [7]

A pure nitrogen carrier gas flows parallel to the 0.6 m2 surface of a liquid acetone in an
open tank. The acetone temperature is maintained at 290 K. If the average mass transfer
coefficient kc for the mass transfer of acetone into the nitrogen stream is 0.0324 m/s,
determine the total rate of acetone release in units of kg.mol/s
