Tutorial 01 TFP260S & CET301S 16/09/2020

Question 1

Ammonia gas is diffusing at a constant rate through a layer of stagnant air 1 mm thick.
Conditions are such that the gas contains 50 percent by volume ammonia at one boundary
of the stagnant layer. The ammonia diffusing to the other boundary is quickly absorbed and
the concentration is negligible at that plane. The temperature is 295 K and the pressure
atmospheric, and under these conditions the diffusivity of ammonia in air is 0.18 cm2 /s.
Estimate the rate of diffusion of ammonia through the layer.

Ans: 5.153 x 10-4 kmol/m2. s

Question 2

In an air-carbon dioxide mixture at 298 K and 202.6 kPa, the concentration of CO2 at two
planes (3 mm) apart are 15 vol.% and 25 vol.%. The diffusivity of CO2 in air at 298 K and
202.6 kPa is 8.2 x10-6 m2 /s. Calculate the rate of transfer of CO2 across the two planes,
assuming

a) Equimolecular counter diffusion

b) Diffusion of CO2 through a stagnant air layer

Ans: (a) 2.23 x 10-5 kmol/m2. s

(b) 2.79 x 10-5 kmol/m2. s

Question 3

Oxygen (A) is diffusing through carbon monoxide (B) under steady state conditions, with the
carbon monoxide non-diffusing. The total pressure is 1 x 105 N/m2 and the temperature 0oC.
The partial pressure of oxygen at two planes 2.0 mm apart is, respectively, 13 kN/m2 and
6500 N/m2. The diffusivity for the mixture is 1.87 x 10-5 m2/s. Calculate the rate of diffusion of
oxygen in kmol/s through each square meter of the two planes.

Ans: 2.97 x 10-5 kmol/m2. s

Question 4

Ammonia gas (A) and nitrogen gas (B) are diffusing in counter diffusion through a straight
glass tube 2.o ft long with an inside diameter of 24.4 mm at 298 K and 101.32 kPa. Both
ends of the tube are connected to large mixed chambers at 101.32 kPa. The partial pressure
of NH3 in one chamber is constant at 20.0 kPa and 6.666 kPa in the other chamber. The
diffusivity at 298 K and 101.32 kPa is 2.30 x 10-5 m2/s. Calculate
Tutorial 01 TFP260S & CET301S 16/09/2020

a) The diffusion of NH3 in kg mol/s and Ib mol/h

b) The partial pressures at a point 0.305 m in the tube

(a) 9.48 x 10-11 kg mol A/s;

7.52 x 10-7 Ib mol A/h
(b) 1.333 x 104 Pa
