Assignment 5 - Plagiarism
Assignment 5 - Plagiarism
1.
I definitely don’t accept what President Gay has done because, not talking about her
testimony on anti-Semitism, the number of her impacted published works, which is eight,
means that significant plagiarism was conducted for a reputed scholar, especially the
president of one of the biggest institutes in the world, and that is considered very much
unethical in scientific researching.
2.
According to the article, she borrowed four sentences from David Canon’s 1999 book, Race,
Redistricting, and Representation: The Unintended Consequences of
Black Majority Districts, without quotation marks and even the footnotes verbatim from the
original author’s endnotes. She only altered just a few words.and did not cite Canon’s work
properly in the paper eventhough his name appears in the reference section. Therefore, this
case can be considered “Recycle” type following the plagiarism spectrum provided by
Turnitin.
3.
What I learn from this case is that integrity in science is very important. It is crucial to provide
accurate and complete citations for all sources used in academic work, if not it will lead to
accusations of plagiarism, which violates the code of ethics and is not accepted anywhere
and in any field. There are some ways to avoid this scientific misconduct:
- When directly quoting someone else's words, it is essential to use quotation marks to
indicate that the text is taken verbatim from another source.
- In addition to using quotation marks, it is necessary to provide proper citations within
the text and in the bibliography or references section. This allows readers to locate
the original sources and verify the information.
- Writers should try to make use of their own ideas as much as possible and in case of
referencing someone else’s ideas, they should paraphrase them.
- Utilize plagiarism detection tools to review their work for any inadvertent instances of
plagiarism.
4.
To check for plagiarism, we can utilize plagiarism detection software or online tools such as
Turnitin, Grammarly, Copyscape, Plagscan, Quetext, or DupliChecker, etc. These tools use
advanced algorithms to identify similarities and matches in the text, highlighting potential
instances of plagiarism by scanning throughout a vast database. They can be effective in
identifying direct copying of text, paraphrased content, and improper citation practices, and
can provide a percentage of similarity, indicating how much of the document matches
existing sources.
