The Impact of Leisure Activities on

Students’ Physical Health and

Mental Health

(Theory of Planned Behavior)

Introduction

In order to engage in activities that have a beneficial effect on oneself, it is essential that

students participate in leisure activities. Simply need to remain peaceful and relaxed

during free time in order to take a break from all of busy work or study. However, there

is an impact on person’s personality who enjoyed their free time. Active recreation that

improves one's physical health and psychological stability raises one's life satisfaction

and values and aids in the development of happiness (Iwasaki, 2007). Many students

engage in physical exercise that makes them happy since it keeps their physical and

mental health stable and healthy while also allowing them to enjoy their leisure

activities. Individuals' physical and mental health can be improved by engaging in

leisure activities, which are significant for regulating the body and mind, reducing life's

stress, and offering a pleasurable experience.

II. Inquiry questions

1. How leisure activities’ affects the physical and mental health of the students?

2. What is the importance of leisure activities to student’s physical and mental

health?

3. Does it affect the behavior of the student?

This paper will provide a complete response to these queries since they relate to Icek

Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior, which holds that students' behavior influenced by

their leisure activities in relation to their physical and mental health. It will be easier to

investigate further about the impact of Leisure Activities on Students’ Physical Health

and Mental Health

III. Methods

A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

Grade 9 –Charming Students of Tagoloan National High School are the respondents of

the present study. The class is composed of (28) Male and (20) Female enrolled in this

school year. Their ages ranges from 13-17 years old.

B. Data Gathering Methods

This study would use the descriptive method of research. Descriptive research is

concerned with the description of data and characteristics about a population. The goal

is the acquisition of factual, accurate and systematic data that can be used in averages,

frequencies and similar statistical calculations. Descriptive studies seldom involve

experimentation, as they are more concerned with naturally occurring phenomena than

with the observation of controlled situations (Valdez, 2013).

The researcher focused on quantitative data collection using survey questionnaire. The

respondents were asked to indicate their responses by checking the appropriate

statement for each item. The questionnaires were retrieved immediately after the

respondents had answered all items. The researcher included questions about impact

of leisure activities on students’ physical and mental health. Students rated how much

they enjoyed a variety of leisure activities and completed assessments that measured

their levels of happiness, depression, anxiety and stress.

IV. Findings and Discussions

Results showed that 70% of the respondents perceived that leisure activities have a

major impact on students' mental health; these activities increase students' performance

and lower their risk of depression. 30% of them thought leisure was wasteful, the lower

their levels of happiness the higher the risk of depression, anxiety and stress. It has

been scientifically proven that people who actively participate in recreational activity are

better adjusted. There are tremendous benefits not only physically but mentally as well.
More precisely, regular physical activity is linked to high levels of pleasure, quality of

life, and life satisfaction (Stubbe et al., 2007) and the development of resources and

institutions for living a stable, balanced life (Candel et al., 2008; Thompson et al., 2011).

Consequently, engaging in regular physical activity through sports or other independent

pursuits is linked to benefits in well-being as well as autonomy, memory, body image,

optimism, emotional stability, and mental flexibility. (Garrido et al., 2011).

The link between physical health and leisure activities was larger than that between age

and leisure activities when physical health was indicated by health constraints. The

association between physical health and mental health was partially mediated by leisure

activities. In short, it doesn’t affect the student’s behavior.

Playing sport, engaging physical and leisure activity reduces psychological distress by

34% 1-3 times a week and 46% 4+ times a week. People who participate in sports clubs

and organized recreational activity enjoy better mental health. Depression is decreased.

Physical activity is as effective as medication for mild to moderate anxiety and

depression. It also improves self-esteem and cognitive function in young people.

V. Conclusion

Numerous studies and reviews show links between social interaction and mental health.

Many depressed people are inactive and put on weight, and physical activity is

considered a potential mediating factor for depression. Being involved in recreational

groups and socially supported physical activity helps people start and maintain physical

activity programs. Participation in fitness and activity programs positively correlates with

feelings of self-esteem. Organized sport and recreation participation can be a

preventative and curative strategy to promote positive mental health and combat mental

illness. Physical activity has been shown to increase feelings of well-being in a variety of

population groups.

Leisure time activities increase people's perspective of using their time wisely, which

has a positive impact on mental health. As a result, engaging in social leisure activities

that give one's day some structure may be a particularly effective and affordable

strategy to enhance mental health in this population.

VI. Reflection

Being active not only keeps children and young people fit and healthy, but provides all

kinds of social, emotional and intellectual benefits positive effects from sports are

achieved primarily through physical activity, but secondary effects bring health benefits

such as psychosocial and personal development and less alcohol consumption.

Negative effects, such as the risk of failure, injuries, eating disorders, and burnout, are

also apparent. Because physical activity is increasingly conducted in an organized

manner, sport’s role in society has become increasingly important over the years, not

only for the individual but also for public health. In this paper, we intend to describe

sport’s physiological and psychosocial health benefits, stemming both from physical

activity and from sport participation per se. This narrative review summarizes research

and presents health-related data. It is discussed that our daily lives are becoming less

physically active, while organized exercise and training increases. Average energy

intake is increasing, creating an energy surplus, and thus, we are seeing an increasing

number of people who are overweight, which is a strong contributor to health problems.

Physical activity and exercise have significant positive effects in preventing or alleviating

mental illness, including depressive symptoms and anxiety- or stress-related disease. In

conclusion, sports can be evolving, if personal capacities, social situation, and biological

and psychological maturation are taken into account.
