Unit 13
Unit 13
Part 1
Unit 13 is about communication. We acquired a lot of new knowledge about
different ways of communication, the advantages of using email, causes and
effects of information overload and how to cope with it. Information overload
occurs when the production of information exceeds managers' ability to process it,
leading to increased stress and work hours that interfere with personal time. Email
is a major contributor to this issue, compounded by redundant communications. To
combat these effects, companies need to establish methods for prioritizing
information and managing communications effectively. Managers should optimize
email use for business efficiency, and individuals should avoid using multiple
channels to send the same messages and create boundaries between work and
personal time.
Part 2
2. Is email, as a mode of communication, burdened with drawbacks? Let's explore.
One drawback is its susceptibility to misinterpretation, as the absence of
visual and auditory cues can lead to misunderstandings or conflicts.
Additionally, the sheer volume of emails in many workplaces can result in
overload, making it easy for important messages to get lost amidst the flood
of incoming mail, ultimately affecting productivity.
However, email also offers benefits such as asynchronous communication,
allowing individuals to respond at their convenience, and the ability to create
a written record of conversations, aiding in documentation and reference.
Despite its drawbacks, email remains a widely used and valuable tool for
communication in various contexts.
Part 3
1. INFOGLUT refers to the overwhelming amount of information available to
individuals, often leading to difficulty in managing and processing it
effectively.
2. INFOGLUT poses a problem because it can lead to information overload,
making it challenging for individuals to find relevant and reliable
information amidst the vast sea of data.
3. The main causes of INFOGLUT include the rapid proliferation of digital
content, the ease of information dissemination through the internet and
social media, and the increasing speed of communication technologies.
4. Solutions to INFOGLUT include practicing information filtering techniques,
setting priorities, utilizing technology tools for organization and information
management, and fostering critical thinking skills to evaluate the credibility
of sources.
5. Developments in IT have changed the way people communicate by
facilitating instant communication through various channels such as email,
social media, and messaging apps, breaking down geographical barriers and
enabling global connectivity.
6. Tips for writing effective emails include keeping messages concise and to
the point, using clear and specific subject lines, proofreading for grammar
and spelling errors, and considering the tone and audience of the email.
7. The advantages of text messaging include its immediacy and convenience
for quick communication, while disadvantages include its potential for
misinterpretation due to lack of tone and context and its tendency to distract
from face-to-face interactions.
8. The advantages of telephone communication include real-time interaction
and the ability to convey tone and emotion through voice, while
disadvantages include potential interruptions, reliance on phone signal or
network connectivity, and difficulty in documenting conversations.
9. Text messaging offers advantages such as quick and convenient
communication, but it also has disadvantages like potential
misunderstandings due to limited context and difficulty conveying complex
ideas effectively.
10.The advantages of postal communication include the ability to send physical
documents securely and the personal touch of receiving handwritten letters,
while disadvantages include slower delivery times compared to digital
communication and the environmental impact of paper usage and
transportation.
