PHYSICS – UNIT 7 LIGHT

7.7 DISPERSION
LEARNER OBJECTIVES
• Learner should be able to describe
how a Spectrum of light is produced.
• Learner should be able to explain
the concept of Dispersion.
• Learner should be able to explain
why we see rainbows.
FLOW OF CONTENT

• Spectrum of Light.

• Dispersion.

• Formation of Rainbow.
SPECTRUM OF LIGHT
• White light is actually a mixture of colours.

• The spectrum of white light consists of colours

arranged in a specific order:
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue ,Indigo and
Violet.
SPECTRUM OF LIGHT
SPECTRUM OF LIGHT

• If a ray of white shines on a block of glass it will

change direction and will refract.
• When the ray of white light is shone on a
triangular glass block, called a prism, it slows
down.
• When the white light hits the side of the prism at
a particular angle, the light emerging from the
other side of prism is split into colours ,called
spectrum.
DISPERSION
DISPERSION
DISPERSION
• The process of splitting white light into separate
colours is called dispersion.
• Dispersion happens because different colours
of light are refracted by different amount.
• Red light is refracted the least because it has
lowest or shortest frequency.
• Violet light is refracted the most because it has
the highest frequency.
DISPERSION

• Red light travels the fastest in a glass prism as

it is refracted the least.

• Violet light travels the slowest in a glass prism

as it is refracted the most.
IMPORTANT TERMS

• Spectrum: The distribution of white light which is

coming through the prism is called spectrum.
• Dispersion of Light: The splitting up of white light
into seven colours on passing through a transparent
medium like a glass prism.
• The colours are arranged in the order from shortest
to highest (increasing order) frequency : Red,
Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue ,Indigo and Violet.
FORMATION OF RAINBOW
• A rainbow is a phenomenon that is caused by
refraction, dispersion and reflection of light in
water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light
appearing in the sky.
• Rainbow caused by sunlight always appears in
the section of sky directly opposite the Sun.
• You can see a rainbow when you are facing
falling rain with the Sun behind you.
FORMATION OF RAINBOW
FORMATION OF RAINBOW
FORMATION OF RAINBOW
FORMATION OF RAINBOW

• After rain, there are many tiny droplets of water

still present in air.
• Rain droplets act like small prisms.
• The sunlight after entering a water droplet is
refracted ,reflected and dispersed so we see a
spectrum of colours which is called a rainbow.
• Rainbow is formed because of dispersion
process inside the rain drops.
