TRANSFORMATION
SUB-TOPICS
• Simple plane transformations
• Vectors
• Further transformations
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Transformation: change in the position or size of an object (or point)

Types of Transformation:
• Reflection
- a flip or mirror image

• Rotation
- a turn

• Translation
- a slide movement (move from a point to another point)

• Enlargement
- making the object larger or smaller
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Reflection: a mirror image of the shape
• Line of reflection is called the mirror line.
• Corresponding points on the object and the image are same distant from the mirror line.
• The mirror line is the perpendicular bisector of the distance between any point and its image.
*mirror line tends to be drawn as dashed line.

To fully define a reflection, you need to give the equation of the mirror line. ( y = m )
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Example
Reflect triangle ABC at the mirror line.
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Rotation: a turn around a fixed point.
• Occurs when an object is turned around a given point
• Can be clockwise / anti-clockwise
• Fixed point = centre of rotation
• Angle through which the shape is rotated = angle of rotation

To describe a rotation, you need to give:

• The centre of rotation,
• The amount of turn (90°, 180° or 270°),
• The direction of the turn (clockwise or anti-clockwise).
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Example
Rotate the triangle ABC 90° clockwise at the origin
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Translation: the movement of an object over a specified distance along a line.
• Object is not twisted or turned
• Movement is indicated by positive/negative signs

Translation should be described by a column vector:

x : positive – move left ; negative – move right

y : positive – move up ; negative – move down

means move 2 units to the right and 3 units downwards

TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Example
On the diagram below, sketch the image of ABC after the translation .
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Enlargement: object enlarged into a bigger/smaller image.
• The lengths of sides on the object are multiplied by a scale factor (k) to form the image.
• Sizes of angles do not change during enlargement

The scale factor can be a whole number or a fraction.

If the scale factor is a negative value, flip the object and multiply the lengths like normally.
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Examples
Enlarge triangle ABC by a scale factor of 2 at the origin.
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Vectors: an ordered pair of numbers (used to describe a translation)
• Ordered pair gives both magnitude and direction

Vector Notation
Vectors can be represented by a directed line segment.
*Note that the notation is either a small letter with a wavy line beneath it or a bold letter: or a .

Vectors can be also represented by a named line such as AB. In such case, the vector is denoted by AB or .
• Order of letters is important ( is not the same as )

Writing vectors as number pairs

Vectors can be also written as a column vector using number pair notation .
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Multiplying a vector by a scalar
• Scalar is just a number (has magnitude but no direction)

Multiplying any vector by a scalar k, gives .

*vector cannot be multiplied by each other, but they can be multiplied by a constant factor or scalar.

--- opposite in direction to 2a,

but with the same magnitude 2a
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
Additional and Subtraction of vectors
TRANSFORMATION (SIMPLE PLANE TRANSFORMATION)
The magnitude of a vector (Extended)
Notation - | | or |a| (for )

Pythagoras' theorem can be used to calculate the magnitude of a vector.

In general, if = then | |=
