B. SET-UP AND PROCEDURE

First Experiment
1. The circuit was connected as shown in Figure 1 with the on/off switch open
and the changeover switch at position 1; The voltmeter measurement was set
its range to 10V.
2. The power supply was switched on and set at 10V direct voltage.
3. The on/off switch was used to close the charging circuit and the voltmeter was
then observed; Observation was noted under (1).
4. The position was then switched to position 2 to close the discharging circuit,
and again, voltmeter was observed and noted under (2).
5. The capacitor was short circuited for a few seconds with a 25 cm connecting
cable and was stopped when voltage was UC= 0V.
6. Next, the changeover switch was moved and starting from 0 V, the capacitor
voltage was read off every 10 seconds. Data was recorded.
7. The changeover switch was moved to position 2, and similar action of reading
off the capacitor’s voltage for every 10 seconds was conducted. Data
measured was recorded in Table 1.
8. The charging circuit was then stopped by using the on/off switch.
Second Experiment
1. The changeover switch was moved to position 1, the charging circuit was then
closed and measured its time taken for the capacitor voltage to reach the
value UC=6V. Data was recorded in Table 2.
2. Secondly, the on/off switch was opened, and the capacitor was discharged
and replaced with 47μF capacitor.
3. Thirdly, the charging circuit was closed and time taken for UC=6V to be reach
was measured again. Data was recorded.
4. Next, the 47kΩ resistor was replaced by the 10 kΩ resistor and measurement
was repeated.
5. After that, the 47 μF capacitor was replaced once again by another capacitor
of capacitance 470 μF and the measurement was repeated.
6. Lastly, the power supply was switched off and all data was recorded in Table
2.
