L3: Cell Organelles

Learning Intention:
To identify organelles within cells and their functions.
Success Criteria:
● Name the main organelles within cells
● Describe the function of main organelles within cells
● Identify the different cell organelles.
● Draw and label different cell organelles.
Warmup

1. What is a cell.

1. Name one example of a unicellular and a multicellular organism.

1. What is a difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Organelle
● An organelle is a membrane-bound structure that carries out specific activities for the cell.

● Different organelles and their functions:

NUCLEUS

CELL MEMBRANE

MITOCHONDRIA

CELL WALL

CHLOROPLAST

VACUOLE

CYTOPLASM
Cells - Nucleus
● It is like the control centre of the cell.

● Controls the activities of the cell,

Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) is found in
the nucleus in the form of Chromosomes

● There is 1 nucleus in a cell.

Cells - Cell Membrane
● The outer barrier of the cell.

● Controls what substances go in and out

of a cell.

● Holds the cell together.

Cells - Mitochondria mitochondria

● Mitochondria are like the powerhouse of the

cell.

● Involved in the process of cellular respiration.

● Converts energy into a form that the cells can

use.

● There are many in a cell.

Cells - Cytoplasm - also known as cytosol
● Also found in both animal and plant cells.

● The Liquid, jelly-like substance inside the cell.

● Composed of water, salts, and various organic

molecules.

● Allows cellular process to occur and holds

organelles.
Cells - Vacuole
● Stores food and water for plant cells.

● Helps keep the plant cell rigid/stiff.

● Are found in animal cells, but are

much smaller and also used for
waste removal.
Some
organelles are
ONLY found in
plant cells….

Let’s take a look

at some!
Cells - Cell Wall
● Supports and protects the
cell.

● Helps make the cell

stronger.

● Found outside the cell

membrane .
Cells - Chloroplast
● Contains chlorophyll.

● Makes plants green.

● Uses light to make ATP(energy)

and sugars.

● Where photosynthesis takes

place to produce food and
energy for the plant cell.
