QUESTION 1 a) A rocket is launched to the International Space Centre from the Kennedy Space Centre. The rocket is launched with a vertical trajectory. Explain the application of the Newton's Third Law of Motion in that rocket flight. (4 marks) b) Two blocks are connected to each other by a cord as shown in Figure 1. Block A has the mass of 18 kg while block B has the mass of 23 kg. Calculate the minimum value for coefficient of friction for the two blocks with the floor so that the Block B will not slide down.

Figure 1 (16 marks) QUESTION 2 a) In order to pile a column, three cables are connected to the column to hold it vertical. Figure 2 shows the top view of the connection. If F A = 235 N and FB= 360 N, calculate the magnitude of Fc and 8.

b) A child and sled slide down a frictionless slope. The total mass of the child and the sled is 50 kg. If the sled starts from rest and has a speed of 3.00 m/s at the bottom, find the height of the hill. (5 marks) c) A 55.0 kg ice skater is moving at 4.00 m/s when she grabs the loose end of a rope, the opposite end of which is tied to a pole. She then moves in a circle of radius 0.80 m around the pole. Determine the force exerted by the horizontal rope on her arms. (3 marks)

QUESTION 3 a) Three resistors are connected in series with a 24 V battery. The values in the three resistors are 4 O, 8 Q, and 12 O. i) Determine the equivalent resistant, (2 marks) ii) Calculate the current in each resistor, (2 marks) b) Find the current in each resistor as shown in Figure 3.

QUESTION 4 a) A key on a piano produce a sound wave with a frequency of 4180 Hz. The speed of the sound in the air is 343 m/s. Find the wavelength of the sound. (2 marks) b) A cord has a mass of 0.25 kg and a length of 4.0 m. A pulse travel along the cord for four times forward and backward in 0.8 s. Determine the tension in the cord. (4 marks) c) In a fireworks display, a rocket explodes in the air and spreads the sound uniformly in all directions. The intensity of the sound is 2.0 x 10~6 W/m2 at a distance of 120 m. Determine the distance from the source which the intensity is 0.8 x 10"6 W/m2. (4 marks) d) Doppler Effect is a common phenomenon happening around us which affect the sound that reach us from the source. Explain this phenomenon. (3 marks) e) A commuter train passes a passenger platform at a constant speed of 40.0 m/s. The train horn is sounded at its characteristic frequency of 320 Hz. i) Calculate the overall change of frequency which is detected by a person on the platform as the train moves from approaching to leaving. (5 marks)

ii) Find the wavelength detected by a person on the platform as the train approaches. (2 marks)

QUESTION 5 a) Define specific heat capacity. (2 marks) b) A 50 g sample of copper is initially at 25C. Calculate the final temperature if 1050 J of energy is added to the sample by heat. Given cCu = 387 J/kg C. (4 marks) c) A 150-g cube of ice at 0C is dropped into 1.2 kg of water that was originally at 79C. Calculate the final temperature after the ice melts. Given c^er = 4186 J/kgC and L^ter = 3.33 x 105 J/kg. (4 marks) d) A copper telephone wire hanged perfectly straight without sagging between poles 35.0 m apart on a winter day when the temperature is -10.0C. Calculate the expansion of the wire during summer when the temperature is 40C. Given aCOpper= 17 x 10"6(C)"1. (3 marks)
