About JSS1 Scheme of Work
The Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) Unified Scheme of Work in Nigeria serves as a
comprehensive guideline for educators to plan and execute teaching activities
throughout the academic year. The new scheme is driven by technology and has
equally enhanced the active participation of learners, improving standards in
schools across the state and tilting the students to internationally acceptable learn-
ing standards.

JSS1 is a class where learners start adjusting to life after primary education, and
the difference between basic and secondary education learning methods. Tutors
need to take note of this and be quick to identify learners who are struggling to ad-
just.

In 2023, the state governments unveiled the reviewed unified scheme of work, mo-
bile learning devices, and e-books for secondary school students, designed to make
learning more engaging and student-centred. The scheme of work is aimed at help-
ing the teachers develop lesson plans and notes that will reflect 21st-century learn-
ing, enabling students to study and research on their own. It is also aimed at en-
hancing the quality of education and ensuring consistency in teaching and learning
across schools in the state.

The unified scheme of work contains syllabi of various subjects required for the Ba-
sic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). It also contains lesson plans, assess-
ment methods, and teaching methodologies which are strategic for effective teach-
ing and learning.
Introduction

In the first year of junior secondary school, students learn the fundamental princi-
ples of mathematics including elementary arithmetic operations such as addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division, and progress to the exploration of shapes,
sizes, and patterns.
Mathematics is everywhere in our daily lives, from managing finances to measuring
cloth for sewing. By studying mathematics, students gain the practical skills needed
to navigate the world effectively.

Mathematics serves as a universal language that aids us in understanding the world

around us. Beyond numbers, calculations, and equations; it acts as a tool for resolv-
ing problems.
Many professions, including, engineering, medicine, and architecture, require strong
mathematical skills. By mastering mathematics in junior secondary school, students
lay the groundwork for pursuing these rewarding career paths in the future.
