IMPROVING SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL THROUGH PROJECT “B’ KO, P’ KO”
( Basura KO, Pulot KO ) IN SUMANGGA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
I. Context and Rationale
Disaster Risk Reduction ( DRR ) is Republic Act No. 10121, also known as the Philippine
DRRM Act. This law emphasizes the importance of 3Rs, which are Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
in disaster risk reduction and management. Specifically, Section 21 of the law establishes the
Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund ( LDRRMF), which includes a component
for Quick Response Fund (QRF) to Support risk reduction activities, including implementation .
(Philippine Commission on Women May 21,2010) Learners of Sumangga Elementary School
have trash can inside their classroom but they dispose their solid waste material everywhere
inside the school area. Solid waste materials where mixed -up in the area for disposal. The issues
encountered by the school head motivated to conduct this action research. The action research
aims to address the address the issues of improper waste disposal in school, particularly the lack
of segregation and self-discipline among learners. This problem can lead to unhealthy and unsafe
environments, causing illness and absenteeism among learners and teachers. It aims to promote
cleanliness and awareness among learners about the 3Rs ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ) to reduce
waste generation and improve waste management practices. In the study of Opeda Nick et al
( 2015 ) that it increases awareness among students and teachers about the importance of proper
waste segregation and management. In the study of Leonieses Kilaton (2023) that developing
guidelines and regulations for waste management within the school which includes setting up
waste collection points, increasing depth of disposal pits and fencing them to prevent littering.
Nkonkonya Kofi (2023 ) stated that implementation of composting practices to reduce waste and
create a valuable resource. Involves setting up composting bins and encouraged students to
participate in the composting process. Placing recycle and reuse bins encourage learners to reuse
materials whenever possible. Partnering with stakeholders in strengthening proper disposal of
solid waste, and ensure everyone on the importance of proper waste management and disposal
II. Action Research Questions
This action research aimed to answer the following questions, assist learners on how to reduced
solid waste disposal in school.
1. What is the level of awareness on the proper disposal of solid waste of the learners of
Sumangga Elementary School?
2. What was the impact of the project before the it was implemented?
3. What was the impact of the project after it was implemented?
4, What is the significant effect of the project on the learners and teachers?
5. How do stakeholders participate in the implementation of the project?
III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy
The proposed innovation of this action research which highlighted on the participation of
learners, teachers and stakeholders lead to the success of this action research are these; School
DRRM Coordinator has to organized a team to check the proper disposal of solid waste in the
trash bins. Teachers has to encourage, motivate learners on the proper disposal of solid waste
through integration of their lesson. Parents will accumulate an amount for the construction of
MRF, and partner with other stakeholder on the need of this action research.
IV. Action Research Methods
a. Participants and /or other Sources of Data and Information
The participants of this study are 230 learners of Sumangga Elementary School. The
teachers who will assist the learners as well as the other stakeholders.
b. Data Gathering Methods
The researcher will gather data through a survey questionnaire and an interview to
Grade IV, V , VI learners, teachers and parents.
c. Data Analysis Plan
The data is analyzed through a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative method.
Quantitative method in a survey questionnaire, and qualitative method in an interview form.
