1.3 REGIONAL GEOLOGY

As per IS1893-1984; the area of the site has been classified as Volcanic rocks and minor basic
intrusives. The general area of the project consists mostly of nearly horizontal dispersed lava
flows of Deccan Trap Basaltic Formation of Cretaceous to Eocene age. Layers of Volcanic
Breccia overlying the Basaltic Formations are also commonly encountered in the area. The
Breccia Bedrock was formed by volcanic eruptions through fissures, in Basalt Bedrock, and
generally consists of hard angular pebbles and gravels encapsulated in fine grained cementing
material consisting mostly of volcanic ash. Breccia Bedrock was encountered for the full depth
of the current exploration at this site. The thickness of the Breccia Bedrock is anticipated to be
less than 50m (170’). These Igneous rocks are generally of horizontal deposition. However,
the inclination of the rock layers near the Mumbai region range between 5 degrees to 15
degrees with the horizontal.

The surface of the rock, at most borehole locations, was completely weathered to the texture
of a soil (Residual soil). With depth, the surficial residual soils grade into the original basalt
bedrock generally with one or more intermediate stages of decomposition or weathering. As
per IS 1893, the site falls under Seismic Zone III, which corresponds to a Modified Mercalli
Intensity of VII. No fault lines are located in close proximity of the site.

3. GEOTECHNICAL ASSESSMENT AND INTERPRETATION

3.1 SUBSURFACE PROFILE

The general subsurface profile developed for the site can bex broadly categorized into
soil/rock strata, which are summarized in Table B below and further explained in detail.

Table B: Summary of Subsurface Conditions

Geological Layers Descriptions

Filled up material Filling Soils
Marine Clay Gray and brown clay
Completely weathered brecccia bedrock
Breccia Rock
Hard Moderately weathered to Sound Breccia bedrock

LAYER I : FILL

Fill, consisting mostly of overburden soil with concrete and boulders was encountered at the
ground surface in the boreholes. The lower boundary of this layer is encountered at depths
of 1.0m to 1.5m below ground surface.

LAYER II : MARINE CLAY

Marine clay consists of brown/ greyish/ yellowish clay was encountered below fill layer. Based
on Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), the consistency of cohesive soil (clay) varied from soft to
stiff. The lower bounder of this layer was encountered at depths of 3.0m to 9.0m below
ground surface.

LAYER III : COMPLETELY WEATHERED ROCK

Completely weathered bedrock was encountered at depths of 7.0m to 9.0m below ground
surface in few boreholes. This layer is formed by the complete in-place disintegration of
parent bedrock material, but still partially retains the original rock mass structure. SPT tests
conducted in this layer encountered refusals. Core recoveries were less than 35%. The lower
boundary of this layer was encountered at a depth of 8.0m below ground surface.

Page 8/18
LAYER IV : HARD BRECCIA BEDROCK

Brown/grey hard breccia bedrock was encountered at depths of 3.0m to 12.0m below
ground surface in boreholes. The bedrock was moderately weathered to sound, generally
improving with depth. Core recoveries in the bedrock layer varied from 35% to 94%, and
Rock Quality Designations (RQDs) varied from Nil to 94%. Compressive strength of rock
samples ranged from 71 kg/cm2 to 175 kg/cm2. Boreholes were terminated in this bedrock at
depths of 25.0m below ground surface.

3.2 GROUND WATER LEVELS

Groundwater accumulation in boreholes was monitored during and after completion of drilling
activities. Groundwater was observed in boreholes at depths of 2.4m to 10.0m below ground
level. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in ground water levels can be expected.

GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED

Page 9/18
4. FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Hard bedrock was encountered at depths of 3.0m to 8.0m below ground surface in the
boreholes. Spread foundations for proposed building with triple basement supported on this
hard bedrock at a minimum depth of 10.0m can be designed for a maximum net allowable
bearing capacity of 240 t/m2. Hard rock founding strata can be identified as it offers complete
refusal to bucket excavators. Depths to completetly weathered rock and hard rock are given in
Table C below.

Table C: Depths to Completely Weathered Rock and Hard Rock

Borehole Depths to Completely

Depths to Hard Rock
No. Weathered Rock

BH-07 7.5m 10.0m
BH-08 9.0m 12.0m
BH-09 7.5m 8.0m

Maximum settlement of foundations will be less than 12mm. A Modulus of subgrade reaction
of 20,000 t/m3 can be utilized for design of foundations. Excavation sides should be sloped at
a maximum slope of 1:1 (Horizontal:Vertical) or flatter within top 7.5m thick overrburden soils
and 1:2 (Horizontal:Vertical) below this depth.

GEO

Page 10/18
4.1 BASEMENT CONSIDERATIONS

Excavation sides should be sloped at a maximum slope of 1:1 (Horizontal:Vertical) or flatter

within top 9.0m thick overrburden soils and 1:2 (Horizontal:Vertical) below this depth. If
adequate space is not available for this side sloping then excavation shoring with bored piles
should be provided.

Basement floors and walls should be adequately water-proofed. Adequate uplift resistance in
the form of dead weight or rock anchors should be provided. An allowable grout/rock bond
stress of 35 t/m2 can be utilized for design of rock anchors in hard rock. Maximum
groundwater table for uplift design should be taken at ground surface.

4.2 LATERAL EARTH PRESSURES

Basement walls and pile shoring walls, if any, will be subjected to lateral earth pressures.
Lateral earth pressure parameters for design of pile shoring walls are given in Table D below.
Hydrostatic pressures and surcharge pressures, if any, should also be considered.

Table D: Lateral Earth Pressure Parameters For Design Of Pile Shoring Walls

6. METHODOLOGY OF GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION
6.1 METHODOLOGY OF FIELD WORK

6.1.1 General
The drilling was commenced by driving a casing of suitable diameter in the upper layers of
the bore holes. Drilling was carried out as per IS 1892 -1979 through 100 mm dia. bore holes.
All boreholes were checked for verticality as specified in the technical specifications.

6.1.2 Rotary Drilling in hard strata / Rock

The hard stratum is confirmed by either the refusal from SPT or due to resistance during the
drilling operation. Once the hard stratum is met with, further drilling is carried out by
Nx/PQ3 size core drilling with Tungsten Carbide/Diamond tipped bits. The work is done
generally as per IS 5313. Drill run of 1.5m was maintained. The core recovery is maintained
above 90%. Each run of the core drilling is properly recorded. At the end of each run the drill
rod string with core barrel is extracted and core is recovered. The cores are carefully
transferred to the GI core boxes and preserved using plastic wrapping. The core recovery
percentage is recorded and also the core pieces transferred to the core box are numbered
and labeled properly. Corebox photographs were taken which are attached in APPENDIX F of
this report. Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is also recorded. Some of the cores are sent to
the laboratory for conducting tests. Rock Core Recovery (C.R. % = (Cumulative Length of
Cores/Length of run) x 100) and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is (RQD = (Total Length of
core pieces of 100.0mm & above in Length / Length of run) x 100 ) .

6.1.3 Sampling
At each change in soil type or change in consistency, a small disturbed sample (SPT) was
taken. Immediately after a small disturbed sample, an undisturbed sample in cohesive soil or
bulk disturbed sample in granular soil was taken. The maximum distance between
undisturbed or bulk disturbed samples measured centre to centre was maintained 1m for
the first 5m below ground level and 1.5m thereafter. All the samples were stored in
coreboxes and protected from extremes of weather.

GE

Page 13/18
6.2 IN-SITU TEST PROCEDURES
a) Standard Penetration Test (SPT):
SPT’s were conducted as per IS 2131-1981. In a SPT test, a standard split spoon sampler is
driven at the bottom of the borehole. The penetration resistance in terms of blows for
300mm penetration of the split spoon sampler is measured as ‘N’ Value. The blows are
impacted by a standard weight of 63.5 kg falling through a height of 750 mm by means of
auto trip arrangement. The resistance is measured for 150 mm, 300 mm, and 450 mm
penetrations. The resistance of first 150 mm is ignored since those blows are considered as
seating blows due to the loosening of the strata. The resistance of next 300 mm is recorded
as standard penetration value ‘N`. If the sampler is driven less than 450 mm (total) then the
penetration resistance is given for the last 300 mm of penetration. If the penetration depth
is less than 300 mm and the blow count is more than 50 then the ‘N’ value is considered as
‘Refusal’ and actual penetration is recorded with the blows given.

6.3 LABORATORY TEST PROCEDURES FOR SOIL SAMPLES

g) Moisture Content
h) Chemical test on soil samples
i) Chemical test on water samples
All the above laboratory tests were carried out as per relevant Indian Standards. All the soil
samples were identified and classified as per IS: 1498-1970.

Page 14/18
6.4 LABORATORY TESTS ON ROCK CORE
