What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is like a super-smart computer program that can learn and make
decisions, similar to how humans do.

Here’s a simple way to understand AI:

 Learning: AI systems can learn from data. For example, they can analyze many
pictures of cats and then recognize a cat in a new picture.
 Thinking: AI can make decisions based on the data it has learned. For instance, it can
recommend movies to you based on the movies you’ve liked before.
 Adapting: AI can improve over time by learning from new data and experiences,
becoming better at its tasks.
What are the 3 types of AI

1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI):

o What it is: AI that is good at one specific task.
o Example: Siri, which can answer questions but can't drive a car.
2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI):
o What it is: AI that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across
different tasks like a human.
o Example: An AI that can both play chess and diagnose diseases (this type
doesn't exist yet).
3. Artificial Superintelligence (ASI):
o What it is: AI that is smarter than the best human brains in every field.
o Example: An AI that can solve complex global problems better than any
human (also theoretical and doesn't exist yet).

Each type represents a different level of AI capability and complexity.

Advantages and Disadvantages of AI

Artificial intelligence has its pluses and minuses, much like any other concept or innovation.
Here’s a quick rundown of some pros and cons.

Pros
It reduces human error

It never sleeps, so it’s available 24x7

It never gets bored, so it easily handles repetitive tasks

It’s fast

Cons

It’s costly to implement

It can’t duplicate human creativity

It will definitely replace some jobs, leading to unemployment

People can become overly reliant on it

Applications of artificial intelligence (AI)

Here are some AI examples kids might be familiar with:

 Maps and navigation (Google Maps, Uber)

 Text Editors or Autocorrect (Microsoft Word, Visual Studio Code)

 Search and Recommendation Algorithms (Yelp, Amazon)

 Video games (Fortnite, Rocket League)

 Facial recognition (Google Pixel, iPhone)

 Smart assistants (Alexa, Siri)

 Chatbots (Discord, ChatGPT)

1. Virtual Assistants: Devices like chat bots, Amazon Alexa or Apple Siri that can
answer questions, play music, and control smart home devices.

2. Games: Video games that have characters making smart moves or adapting to how
you play.
3. Smartphones: Features like facial recognition to unlock phones.

How AI is Used

1. Speech Recognition: AI is used in voice recognition to convert spoken language

into text and understand voice commands. It listens to your voice, breaks down the
sounds, matches them to words, and understands the context to execute actions.
Examples include virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa.
2. Facial Recognition: AI in face recognition identifies and categorizes objects, people,
and scenes in images. It works by analysing the image's pixels, recognizing patterns,
and matching them to a database of known images. Examples include facial
recognition in smartphones, object detection in self-driving cars.

3. Recommendation Systems: AI in recommendation systems suggests products,

movies, or content based on user preferences and behaviour. It analyses past
interactions, compares them with similar users, and predicts what you might like.
Examples include foods recommending, Amazon shopping etc.

4. Fun AI Activities for Class 4 Students

1. Drawing Bots: Programs that can draw pictures or shapes based on your
instructions. Websites like Quick, Draw! let kids draw and see AI guess their
doodles.

How Quick, Draw! Works for Kids:

Quick, Draw! is an interactive web-based game that uses AI to recognize doodles. Here’s
how it works in simple terms for kids:

1. Start the Game:

o Kids are given a prompt to draw something (like a cat, sun, or house) within a limited
time, usually 20 seconds.

2. Drawing:
o They draw the object using their mouse or touchscreen. The game encourages quick
sketches rather than detailed drawings.

3. AI Recognition:
o As they draw, the AI tries to guess what they are drawing. The AI uses a type of AI
called a neural network, which has learned to recognize drawings by being trained
on millions of doodles from other players.

4. Feedback:
o The AI provides real-time feedback, saying things like “I see a circle” or “I see a line.”
It keeps guessing until it correctly identifies the drawing or the time runs out.

5. Learning:
o If the AI guesses correctly, it lets the kids know, and they move on to the next
drawing prompt. If it doesn’t guess correctly, it provides a message like “I couldn’t
guess it” and shows what it thought the drawing could be.
2. Interactive Stories: AI can help create stories where students make choices and the
story changes. Sites like Story bird encourage creative writing.

 Writing Prompts: AI gives you ideas to start your story based on the pictures you choose.

 Writing Help: It checks your spelling and grammar as you write and gives you tips to make

your story better.

 Story Ideas: AI suggests what could happen next in your story or helps you think of new

characters.

 Learning: It keeps track of your writing progress and gives you personalized advice.

 Safety: AI makes sure all stories are appropriate for kids.

 Reading Suggestions: It recommends stories you might like to read based on your
interests.
3. Educational Games: Games that adapt to a student's learning pace, helping them
practice math or spelling. Apps like Khan Academy Kids use AI to personalize
learning.

 Activity: Students can design and develop educational games using simple game
development platforms or tools like Scratch. They can create games that teach
concepts such as math operations, spelling, geography, or history.
 Learning Objectives: Encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity.
Students learn basic game design principles, logical reasoning, and how to integrate
educational content into interactive formats.
 Example Tools: Scratch (for creating games with block-based programming),
Kodu Game Lab (visual programming environment for game creation), or educational
game templates available online.

4.Guess Your Emotion: Students consider how facial features help us recognize
emotions and train an AI to recognize these.
 Activity: Students can participate in an interactive game where they express
different emotions (happy, sad, surprised, etc.) through facial expressions or
descriptions. Another student or a simple AI program can guess the emotion based on
the expression or description given.
How to Explain AI Concepts?

1. Machine Learning: Explain it as teaching the computer. Just like how we learn from
practice, computers learn from lots of examples.

 Definition: It's a type of AI where machines learn from data and improve over
time.

 Example: Like teaching a robot to recognize cats by showing it lots of cat

pictures, so it can identify cats in new pictures.

 Benefits: Helps computers make decisions or predictions based on patterns in data,

like recommending movies based on what you've watched before.
2. Robotics: AI in robots, making them smart enough to follow instructions, like robots
used in manufacturing or even robotic toys.

 Definition: Robotics is a branch of technology that deals with the design,

construction, operation, and use of robots.
 Explanation: Robots are machines that can carry out tasks automatically or with
some degree of autonomy. They are designed to interact with their environment and
perform specific functions.
3. Data: Teach them that AI learns from data, like how we learn from experiences.
Simple examples include how Netflix learns what shows you might like.

 Definition: Data refers to facts, statistics, or information collected for analysis or
