Family and religious festivals:

Christmas:

 we celebrate the birth of Jesus


 we buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with candles, candies, sweets and small coloured
light bulbs
 we buy or make presents and wrap them up (to giftwrap)
 we unwrap the presents on Christmas Eve (Holy Night)
 we cook the Christmas dinner (roast turkey) stuffed cabbage, gingerbread
 on Christmas Day (25th) we relax, visit relatives, eat a lot (fish soup, fried fish, poppy-
seed roll and bread)
 on Boxing Day (26th) we sleep and watch TV

on New Year’s Eve:

 we usually have parties with friends


 we eat sausages and drink champagne
 we go to see the fireworks
 we sing/listen to the national anthem at midnight

on New Year’s Day:

o we eat lentils (to be rich) and pork (to be lucky)


o we suffer from hangover
o we mustn’t eat poultry
o we make New Year’s resolutions

at Easter:

 we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the coming of the spring


 we eat ham and hard boiled eggs (and horseradish)
 in Hungary boys go sprinkling girls, they sprinkle girls with water, mineral water or
perfume
 girls give them chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, painted eggs or money
 the eggs symbolizes eternal life
 in the afternoon girls sprinkle boys who are late
Whit(sun)/Pentecost:

 7th Sunday after Easter, the Holy Ghost comes down from Heaven to the apostles
Birthdays:

 When it’s my birthday I get some presents and a chocolate cake with candles. I celebrate
with my family and friends. I usually throw a party for my friends. I like to get books,
money and a bunch of flowers. On my birthday we decorate the house with party
balloons and ribbons

Namedays:

graduation, christening

at weddings:
 At weddings the bride and the bridegroom wear elegant clothes: a white dress with veil,
and a suit. The superstition says the bride should wear something new, something old,
something blue and something borrowed. The young couple invite their family, relatives
and friends. After the wedding ceremony they usually have a reception where they eat,
drink and dance till morning.
National holidays(Hungary):
 on the 15th of March we celebrate the revolution and war of independence of 1848-1849
 on the 23rd of October we commemorate the revolution of 1956
 on the 20th of August we celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian state
 on the 6th of October we celebrate the 13 martyrs of Arad

Anglo-Saxon festivals:

1. at Halloween: on the 31st of October. We remember ghosts and the dead. We make Jack
lanterns: we carve pumpkins and we put candles inside. Children go from house to house,
and say: „Trick or treat!”. If they don’t get candies or chocolate, they play a trick on the
people.
2. Valentine’s Day:
a) on the 14th of February we celebrate love and lovers
b) we give our beloved ones chocolate, presents, red roses and we send
postcard and we write poems

International Festivals:
 Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday: on the 1st Sunday of May in Hungary,
GB: 4th Sunday un Lent (middle of March)
US: 2nd Sunday in May; wear a carnation (coloured/white) we give presents,
flowers to our mother
 Women’s Day: on the 8th of March, men give flowers or chocolate to women, at work they usually have
parties
 Labour Day: it’s on the 1st of May (Hungary)
US: 1st Monday in September
 May Day: 1st of May, dance round the maypole (with long ribbons), choose a May Queen
 Children’s Day: on the last Sunday of May, children get presents and families go to the Fun Fair
 Thanksgiving:
- on the 4th Thursday of November; big family gatherings
- roast turkey filled with Chestnut
- pumpkin pie
