5.2 System Configuration

Fig. 5.2.1 shows the system configuration of the excitation control system. In the thyristor
excitation system, the 6.9kV SWGR voltage is converted through an excitation transformer and
a thyristor rectifier into DC voltage for excitation power.
Main components of excitation control system are AVR (digital automatic voltage regulator)
which has 32 bits CPU, EIOL(Excitation system I/O Module) which is the detecting circuits of
generator operating situation for the controller.
The inputs of EIOL are secondary signals of generator output VT and CT.
Input signals to the EIOL are isolated and translated to adequate values in it. AI (Analog Input)
block in the controller detects these values and the controller calculates the output by installed
operation-software according to these values.
The calculated result is translated to TRCL (Thyristor Rectifier Control Module) and outputs to
thyristor rectifier.
The Master(PRC-A/B) controller is duplicated so that a fault in the main system will result in an
automatic switchover to a stand-by system.

NOTE

■ For detail, see the control block diagram and schematic connection diagram,
listed in “11. Drawing List.”

6.3 PRCL (Power generation Regulating Controller Module)

This unit is a power generation regulating controller (PRC) module: PRCL01 of TOSMAP-LX
series.
This controller is appropriate for high-speed sampling control (e.g., closed loop control system)
and applied to a control unit that requires high-speed calculation such as generator excitation
control.
The connection is established with TOSMAP-LX series CPU unit CPUL01 via 1 Gbps Ethernet
for control, and with indicator (Local Control Terminal) via 100 Mbps Ethernet. Various system
configurations are allowed by connecting with IO module that realizes high-speed sampling via
dedicated PRC Module Link (PM-Link) that realizes high-speed response. Depending on the
importance and reliability requirements for control equipment, duplex or single system can be
configured.
In the duplex configuration, high-speed communication between each PRC module is possible
with the tracking link.
If the reset switch is pressed in the failed state where the error LED is lit, PRCL will shift to the
initialization mode in which the control program stops.
If the RUN/STOP switch is set to STOP, PRCL will shift to maintenance mode in which CPU is
shutdown.

NOTE

■ Do not set the RUN/STOP switch to STOP except when replacing PRCL01
module.

NOTE

■ Do not remove the power connector when the RUN/STOP switch is on "RUN"
while the DC + 24 V power is on. Failure to follow the instruction could result in
damage of control program.

7. Description of Functions
7.1 Control Functions
The control function of the excitation controller is explained below. The control functions are
performed by the Master(PRC-A/B) controller and the System(CPU-A/B) controller.

(AVR) (90R) agree.
Manual excitation The gate pulse phase of the thyristor rectifier is adjusted so
controller that the generator field current and the field current set value ○
(MEC) (70R) agree.
Voltage setting The AVR control target value (voltage set value) is
(90R) calculated and output.

At starting by AVR, the voltage raise control is performed
using a ramp function after reaching 90% voltage.
Field current setting The MEC control target value (field current set value) is

(70R) calculated and output.
Over excitation limiter This function limits the field over current of the generator.
(OEL) This function has an operation delay characteristic (inverse

time characteristic) to allow for over excitation operation that
supplies fault current in the event of power system fault.
Under excitation limiter This function ensures that the leading power factor
(UEL) operation will not exceed the following characteristic
equation ○
2 2
Q/et = -a+b(P/et ) .
A two-line setting can be made.
V/Hz limiter This function limits over voltage per hertz of generator and

(VPFL) main step-up generator transformer.
Automatic reactive The AQR regulates the reactive power of the generator by
power regulator controlling the 90R (the reference of AVR). The control
(AQR) equation is “Q=a+bP”. The parameter a and b are set
by the setter on the OPS screen. If the reactive power(Q)

of the generator deviates from “ Q=a+bP”, the AQR
function raise or lower the 90R in order to pull back the
reactive power to the above equation.

10. Maintenance and Inspection

10.1 Items of Inspection
The main constitutional devices of this controller cubicle are highly reliable static devices
consisting mainly of semiconductor circuits. Known as microcomputers, these static devices
have self-diagnostic functions and thus require no special maintenance services in terms of
hardware, other than the inspections that are performed on general cubicles. For long and
stable operation, it is advised that these static devices are subjected to regular inspections
and that the installation environments conform to the specifications.
The major difference of this controller from the ordinary equipment is that the controller has
software. Maintenance of software includes check on programs and on set values. The
items of maintenance and inspection for this equipment are summarized in Table 10.1.1.

10.3 Operation for Failure of System

If a fault occurs, record the time of fault, the operation situation and fault annunciations, and
check the display contents on the OPS. Please inform us of the details of the abnormal
condition.
How the equipment is to be operated for the time being after the fault depends on the contents
of the fault. For detail, see “9. What to Do in The Event of Failure”.

10.4 How to Retrieve Error Log

The error log can be checked using a maintenance tool.
For detail, see “TOSMAP-LX General Information manual”: 6F2B0238.

10.5 Handling of Controller Printed Circuit Boards

The handling of equipment installed in the following units is explained.
(1) System(CPU) controller (A-system/B-system)
(2) Master(PRC) controller (A-system/B-system)
The procedure for mounting and removing the controller equipment varies depending on the
kind of equipment.
The procedure for replacing these equipment will be explained below.

10.5.1 CPUL, PIFL

Replacement procedure
When you replace the unit, be careful for the following.
(1) Confirm that the model of a replacement unit is the same as that of the previous unit. Be
careful for the difference in the hardware revision and software revision as well. Operate the
power switch to turn off the unit (only for CPUL01).
(2) Before dismounting the unit, match mark all the cables connected to the unit and disconnect
them.
(3) Dismount the unit from the Panel. Follow the instructions of the mounting bracket for how to
dismount the Panel.
(4) Set the values of the DIP switch in the replacement unit same as in the previously installed
unit.
(5) Mount the unit to the Panel. Follow the instructions of the mounting bracket for how to
mount the Panel.
(6) After mounting the unit, connect the cables. Operate the power switch to turn on the unit
(only for CPUL01).
(7) Confirm that the equipment is operating normally.
