2. finished the exam

5. My brother plays basketball.
Developing and Teacher will discuss the different between subject and predicate.
Deepening Understanding
The subject of the sentence is what (or whom) the sentence is about. In the
sentence “The cat is sleeping in the sun,” the word cat is the subject. A predicate
is the part of a sentence, or a clause, that tells what the subject is doing or what
the subject is. “The cat is sleeping in the sun.”

Read and analyze the groups of words. Study the difference between them.

A.
• to drink the nectar of the flowers in spring
• petals in summers
• on pollens in autumn

B.
• Gilromi was flapping around a bright ignited lamp.
• Mirhana was a beautiful, robust moth.
• The lizard on the wall was hungry.

What can you say about the groups of words in Set A? What about in Set B?
Which of the two sets express complete ideas? Which is clearer and easier to
understand?
The groups of words in Set B express complete thoughts They are examples of
sentences. A sentence is a word or group of words that expresses a complete
thought. It contains essential parts of the sentence, which is the subject and the
predicate. It also begins with a capital letter and end with punctuation marks.
Thus, the examples in Set B are sentences.
A sentence can also be a word like "Jump" The word jump is considered a
sentence because its meaning can be understood When one gives a command, one
needs not mention the word you, which is the subject of the word jump.
"(You) Jump". This sentence then has a subject (implied) and a predicate
On the other hand, a group of words that does not express a complete thought
is called a phrase. A phrase is simply a part of a sentence
