PRINCIPLE OF PHARMACY PRACTICE

Learning governinig law and ethics of educating and training of pharmacy technician who is to
work with the pharmacist one of the most highly rank health professional.

Due to legal requirment attached to pharmacist,it’s pharmacy technician must also comply with
applicable laws and regulations and know how this is relatedto there work in their field.

PHARMACY HISTORY
Phramacy was first practice in Baghdad Iraq known as Babylon then in 8th century,then Europe
in 11th century. Nigeria in 1n 1881 Richard Zaccheaus Bailey aka the doctor,an Europeman
opened a pharmacy store along Balogun street by the permission of the then governor in
council.

In 1889 dispensers were trained in Lagos under apprenticeship scheme.They serve with
medical doctor and later worked in government hospitals,and were guided by pharmacy and
poison ordinance.The practice was regulated by resident and chief medical officer in 1902.

In 1922 school of pharmacy Yaba college Lagos was established where dispenser were formally
trained .

In 1921, Association of dispenser was formed and registered but later change to Pharmaceutical
society of Nigeria in 1927.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHARMACIST AND PHARMACY TECHNICIAN.

They work closely to deliver medication,adviceand assist patients.Pharmacy technician look up
to pharmacist for guidiance in their duties.

PHARMACIST.
Medication expert who ensure best medication treatment out come as well as cost-effective
and safe therapy delivery to patients.

An health care professional having special education and training in practice of pharmacy.

Person licensed to prepared,compound and dispensed medicine base on prescription from

licensed physcian/dentist. Advice licensed health care provider on drug use,chemical and
physical property of drugs as well as dosage form available.

Generally pharmacist is a qualified person that play key role in supplying information about
drugs.
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
Part of pharmay operation.Support pharmacist in their practice.Work under supervision of a
licensed pharmacist to assist in dispensing medication,recording of patients details and other
pharmact related activities.Report dicrectly to the pharmacist who is responsible to patients
care and safety.

ROLE of Pharmacy Technician

Help in filling prescription presented to pharmacist for final review.Iventory taking,file paper
work ,evaluate patient information,distribute and storage of medication.

Must demonstrate ethical conduct and maintain patients information as confidential

STANDARD OF PRACTICE.
Must act professionally; This include code of ethics,dangerious drugs act,food and drugs
act,poison and pharmacy act,decree of pharmacist council of Nigeria.Must be aware of changes
in law and comply with these changes.There must be good working relationship with their
coleagues and other health professionals. Provid pharmacy technician services to
patients.Should know when to refer patients to pharmacist.Maintain a profeessional appearanc
to the public such that they can easily be identify.Must not practice or act under a compromise
condition that can affect profession integrity.

There must be a professional relationship with the patients they render services to, hornor
patient’s request to transfer care to another health care giver/practioner.

Must report immediately to the pharmacist when ther is incidence of drugs

challenges/problems.

Dispensing procedure must be properly follow such as hygiene procedures when dispensing,
appropriate package of drugs and well label.

CODE OF CONDUCT
This is a minimal ethic and legal standard designed by pharmacist council of Nigeria within
which a certify pharmacy technician must act in the priority that public health and protection is
consider most. Work in a manner that promote integrity and positively show case the
profession.

As a technician you must work under the supervision of a pharmacist as well as maintain a high
standard of integrity and responsibly conduct their action.
Pharmacy technician assist the pharmacist in medication dispensing,recording of patients data
and any other pharmacy related duties that may be assign by the pharmacist such remain
accountable to the suppervising pharmacist.

Resposibility Relating To Legal Requirements.

Pharmacy technician must act within the legal requirement of their practice in accordance with
local,state and federal laws and regulations.

Must not violate legal standard of federal law and regulating agencies.

Responsibilty To Public and Employer

Pharmacy related services must be completely deliver. Pharmacy technician must recognise
there practice limitation except authorize by the supervising pharmacist. Maintain patient
confidentiality at all time. Representation of knowledge acquired must be accurate to public and
employer. Must observe health and safety procedure in relation to pharmacy related duties.
