TOPIC: COAL AND PETROLEUM

NAME: _______________ CLASS: VIII SEC :_____ DATE: _______
I. Fill in the blanks.
(a) Fossil fuels are Coal, Petroleum, and natural gas.
(b) Process of separation of different constituents from petroleum is called Refining.
(c) Least polluting fuel for a vehicle is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
II. Tick True/False against the following statements.
(a) Fossil fuels can be made in the laboratory. False
(b) CNG is more polluting fuel than petrol. False
(c) Coke is the almost pure form of carbon. True
(d) Coal tar is a mixture of various substances. True
(e) Kerosene is not a fossil fuel. False

III. Answer the following:

1. Describe how coal is formed from dead vegetation. What is this process called?

Ans: About 300 million years ago, Earth had dense forests. These got buried under the soil due to
natural processes like flooding. As more and more soil got deposited over them, they got compressed.
As they sank deeper and deeper, the dead plants got exposed to very high temperature and pressure.
They slowly got converted into coal. The slow process of formation of coal from dead vegetation is
known as carbonisation.

2. Describe the process of formation of Petroleum.

Ans: Petroleum was formed from organisms living in the sea. As these organisms died, their bodies
settled at the bottom of the sea and got covered with layers of sand and clay. Over millions of years,
absence of air, high temperature and high pressure transformed the dead organisms into petroleum and
natural gas.

3. Name the petroleum product used for surfacing of roads.

Ans: Bitumen is used for surfacing of roads.

4. What are the advantages of using CNG and LPG as fuels?

Ans: CNG and LPG are gaseous fuels that have a lot of advantages:
 CNG and LPG can be transported easily through pipelines.
 CNG and LPG are clean fuels and they do not release harmful and polluting gases, smoke etc and do
not leave behind residue when burnt.
 CNG and LPG give a lot of heat energy when burnt (have a high calorific value).
 CNG and LPG burn easily as they can be ignited with a tiny spark.

5. Explain why fossil fuels are exhaustible natural resources?

Ans: The process of formation of fossil fuels requires millions of years. Dead vegetation and animals that
get buried deep inside the earth require high temperature and pressure to form fossil fuels, which cannot be
done in the laboratory. Thus, their known reserves are limited. These may not last beyond a few hundred
years if we continue to use these fossil fuels at a rapid rate and may get exhausted.

6. Describe the characteristics and uses of coke.
Ans: Coke is a tough, porous and black substance, it is an almost pure form of carbon. Coke is used in the
manufacture of steel and in the extraction of many metals.

7.Write the various products of coal and their uses.

8. Name the various constituents of petroleum and their uses.

9. What are the four main types of Coal?

Ans. There are four main types of coal depending on the varying percentage of carbon content - peat,
lignite, bituminous and anthracite. Anthracite is the best variety of coal.
10. What is the best variety of coal?
Ans. Anthracite is the best variety of coal. It burns longer with more heat, less dust and soot.

11. Differentiate between
a) Bituminous and Bitumen b) Petroleum and Petrol

BITUMINOUS BITUMEN
1. It is also known as Black lignite. 1.Bitumen is a sticky, black, highly viscous
liquid or semi-solid form (residue) of
petroleum, it is commonly referred to as
asphalt.
2. It is used for power generation and 2. It is used in the surfacing roads, paints.
manufacturing other fuels such as coke and
coal tar

PETROLEUM PETROL
1. Petroleum is a crude oil; it is a mixture of 1. Petrol is the component of Petroleum. It is
various hydrocarbons (compounds made of refined from petroleum by fractional
hydrogen and carbon). distillation.
2. It is also called crude oil or black gold. 2. It is also called Gasoline.

12. Write the steps involved in the fractional distillation of petroleum or crude oil.
Ans. The process of refining petroleum is carried out in refineries and is called fractional distillation.
The steps are as follows:
1. Crude oil is heated and changed into vapours/gas.
2. Components of crude oil condense at different heights and get collected in separate trays.
3. The liquids having higher boiling point liquify at lower level in the column.
4. The liquids having lower boiling point liquify towards the top of the column.
