Roll No………………………..

Course Code: 101601CE

Examination: NOV-DEC 2023
Course: STEEL DESIGN

Time Allowed: 4 Hours Maximum Marks: 100

Minimum Marks: 35
Note: Attempt all questions. Part (A) of each question is
compulsory and carries 4 marks; attempt any two parts from
part (B), (C) and (D) carrying 8 marks each.
Assume suitable data, if found missing, and mention it clearly.
Draw neat sketches, where necessary. Use of IS 800: 2007 and
Steel Tables is permitted. All designs are to be done as per the
Limit State Method as specified in IS 800: 2007. All loads are
factored, unless mentioned otherwise. Assume Steel Grade as
Fe410W.
Q1 A Write down the limitations of designing steel 4
structures by Working Stress Method (WSM)
approach.
B a) Classify different types of Cross-sections on 16
the basis of formation of plastic hinges.
b) Determine whether the cross section of WPB
360 x 370 x 136.20 (Grade Fe 410W) is
slender or not slender, if it is to be used as a
column with pinned ends and is subjected to
an axial load only.
C Find out the collapse load for a continuous beam 16
of uniform cross section as shown in figure below.

Q2 A (i) The maximum pitch for tension and 4

compression members respectively are :-
a) (12t or 200 mm, whichever is less) and (16t
or 200 mm, whichever is less)
b) (12t or 300 mm, whichever is less) and (16t
or 300 mm, whichever is less)
c) (16t or 200 mm, whichever is less) and (12t
or 200 mm, whichever is less)
d) (16t or 300 mm, whichever is less) and (12t
or 300 mm, whichever is less)

(ii) The minimum pitch for an M16 bolt of grade

4.6 is?
a) 33 mm
b) 40 mm
c) 16 mm
d) 27 mm
B A 75 mm x 8 mm tie member is to transmit a 16
factored load of 145 KN. Design fillet welds and
necessary overlaps for the following cases. The
steel used is of grade Fe 410. Assume the gusset
plate to be 12 mm thick.
a) The weld is done on the 2 sides of the plate.
b) The weld is done on the 3 sides of the plate.
c) The weld is done on all the 4 sides of the
plate.
C A single-bolted double-cover butt joint is used to 16
connect two plates which are 8 mm thick.
Assuming 16 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 and

cover plates to be 6 mm thick, calculate the
strength and efficiency of the joint, if 4 bolts are
provided in the bolt line at a pitch of 45 mm as
shown in figure. Also, determine the efficiency of
the joint if two lines of bolts with two bolts in
each line have been arranged to result in a double-
bolted double-cover butt joint.

Q3 A What is shear lag? Why for larger connection 4

lengths, shear lag is smaller?
B A tension member 0.95 m long is to resist a 16
service dead load of 20 KN and a service live load
of 60 kN. Design a rectangular bar of standard
structural steel of grade Fe 410. Assume that the
member is connected by one line of 16 mm
diameter bolts of grade 4.6.
C Determine the tension capacity of the sections 16
shown in the figure below for the following
cases:-
a) Angles are placed on the opposite sides of
the gusset plate (tack bolted)
b) Angles are placed on the same side of the
gusset plate (tack bolted)
c) Angles are not tack bolted

Q4 A What do you mean by web crippling and web 4

buckling? Explain with neat sketch.
B Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry 16
a factored axial compressive load of 65 kN. The
length of strut is 3 m between intersections. It is
connected to 12 mm thick gusset plate by 20 mm
diameter 4.6 grade bolts. Use steel of grade Fe
410.
C Design a built-up column 9 m long to carry a 16
factored axial compressive load of 1100 kN. The
column is restrained in position but not in
direction at both the ends. Design the column with
connecting system as battens with bolted
connections. Use two channel sections back to
back. Use steel of grade Fe 410.
Q5 A How are the column buckling and the lateral 4
buckling of the beam similar?
B A simply supported steel joist of 4.0 m effective 16
span is laterally supported throughout. It carries a
total uniformly distributed load of 40 kN
(inclusive of self weight). Design an appropriate
section using steel of grade Fe 410.
C Determine the design bending strength of ISLB 16
350 @ 486 N/m considering the beam to be
laterally unsupported. The unsupported length of
the beam is 3.0 m. Assume steel of grade Fe 410.
