Power Electronics 2 - EPM 354

The The Exam Consists of two Questions in one Page & Formula sheet Total Marks: 25 Marks

Answer all Questions

Question:1 (10 Marks)

a) What is the type of power MOSFETs that is used commonly and why? Sketch its physical
structure and illustrate its transfer characteristic. {5 Marks}

b) Design a boost converter that will have an output of 5 V from a 3V source. Design for
continuous inductor current and an output ripple voltage of less than 1 %. The load is a
resistance of 10 Ω. The switching frequency is selected at 50 kHz to be above the audio range.
Assume ideal components for this design. {5 Marks}

Question: 2 (15 Marks)

A step-down DC converter is feeding an RL load. R = 5Ω, L = 7.5 mH, switching frequency

f = 5 KHz, k = 0.4, and supply voltage Vs = 220 V. Draw the waveforms of the output voltage,
load current, and supply current. {3 Marks}
Calculate:
a) The minimum instantaneous load current. {3 Marks}
b) The peak to peak load ripple. {1 Mark}
c) The average value of the load current. {2 Marks}
d) The effective input resistance seen by the source. {2 Marks}
e) The rms load current. {2 Marks}
f) The rms supply current. {2 Marks}
