EE2202

The document is a midterm exam for a power electronics course. It contains 3 questions about thyristor and SCR circuit operation, including forward voltage application timing, reverse recovery current behavior, and importance of turn-on di/dt rating. It also asks about unequal voltage distribution during turn-on and turn-off, SCR series-parallel configuration for high voltage applications, and output current calculations for a single-phase semi-converter circuit with and without a damaged SCR.

MIDSEMESTER EXAMINATION, Spring 2023

SESSION: 2022-2023
TH
B.TECH 4 SEMESTER DEPT. CODE: EE
SUBJECT: Power Electronics Subject Code: EE 2202
FULL MARKS: 30 DURATION OF EXAMINATION: 02 hours
Answer all the 3 Questions
Figures at the Right Hand Margin Indicate Marks
All Parts of a Question Should be answered at one Place
01 (a) Can a forward voltage be applied to an SCR soon after its anode current has 03
fallen to zero? Explain.
(b) A forward voltage is applied to an SCR soon after its reverse recovery
current drops nearly to zero value. Discuss what would happen to the SCR. 03

(c) Discuss the importance of 𝑑𝑡 rating during the turn-on process of a thyristor. 04
02 (a) Discuss how SCRs suffer from unequal voltage distribution across them 04
during their turn-on and turn-off processes.
(b) A number of SCRs, each with a rating of 2000V and 50A, are to be used in
series-parallel combination in a circuit to handle 11kV and 400A. For a derating
factor of 0.15, calculate the number of SCRs in series and parallel units.
The maximum difference in their reverse recovery charge is 20 micro
coulombs. Calculate (i) the value of dynamic equalizing capacitance and (ii) the
voltage across each of the slow thyristors in case one series-connected SCR is 06
fast.
03 A single-phase semi-converter delivers power to RLE load with = 5Ω , 𝐿 =
10mH and 𝐸 = 80𝑉. The ac source voltage is 230V, 50Hz. For a continuous
conduction, find the average value of output current for a firing angle delay of
50° . If the main SCR T2 is damaged and open circuited, find the new value of
average output current on the assumption of continuous conduction. Sketch the
output voltage waveforms, load current waveforms in both working conditions 10
and indicate the conduction of various components.
