CORE CONCEPTS IN TOUR GUIDING SERVICES
What is Tour? - Coined from the Latin word tornare and Greek tornos, meaning to circle around , the word “tour” means to come back to the point of origin after going to a destination elsewhere. Who is Tour Guide? - A tour guide is a person who guides tourists as they go about a foreign place. What is Tour Guiding? - Tour guiding refers to the provisions of professional service to interpret an area's cultural and natural heritage. - Tour Guiding is the process of interpreting attractions to visitors, directing, informing, instructing, and leading them in the visited places. - Tour Guiding is usually for a shorter length of time. It refers to the specific activity at a sight or an attraction for a scheduled portion of time. Main Components of Tour Guiding • Attraction • Visitor • Guide Roles of a Tour Guide • meeting and greeting the tour participant upon arrival; • facilitating introductions; • coordinating and pre-arranged accommodation and transport; • making sure that tour participants are comfortable; • pointing out place of interest; • preparing and presenting tour guide spiels called tour commentaries; • researching and sharing general information about a place; • attending to operational problems, such as booking changes, lost bags, or sickness • preparing and submitting post-tour written reports. Elements of Tour Guiding Professionalism- before becoming a tour guide, a person must undergo a training program. One must acquire a license to practice legally. Service- tour guides provide service, a form of product that is intangible, perishable, and one whose production and consumption happens simultaneously. Interpretation- one of the tour guide’s role is to educate the tourist about the meanings and significance of cultural attractions. Physical Elements- tour guides combine service with the physical elements to create the toral tourism experience for clients. Physical elements include hotel, facilities, transport vehicles, parks and museums. Characteristics of a Tour Guide- tour guide must be mature, responsible, patient, tactful and sensitive to different cultures. They must also be articulate, quick-witted, organized, and healthy to cope with physical demands. They must show sincere interest in the places where they practice their profession. History of Tour Guiding • Ancient Times Since ancient times, tour guides were valued, especially by historians like Herodotus, who prized the information the guides provided him. • Dark-Middle Ages Tour guides were more of a safety escort for travelers, pilgrims, and businessmen • Renaissance In addition to the safety escort position, tour guides have taken on the role of mentor and educator for travelers. • Modern Age No evidence of organized tour guide training was found before the 20th century aside from Thomas Cook's travel agency. On the other hand, England was one of the first places to establish proper rules, regulations, and training for tour guides Relevance of Tour Guiding Services • Tour guiding is a rewarding occupation and a lifelong career. • Some tourist guides earn enough from the tips alone. • Tour Guides remain steadfast in their dedication to meeting people and learning about other people’s cultures. • Tour guides play an important role in multibillion-dollar tourism industry.
