b) It is found that the during a 3 phase symmetrical short circuit at the terminals of a synchronous 6
generator, the current is initially very high, then reduces to a certain value and eventually it settles
down to constant value. Give reasons for the same.
c) A transmission line is subjected to a three phase symmetrical fault at the far end of the transmission 8
line. The supply voltage has an instantaneous value of v = 1000sin(3140-65°) KV. If the resistance
of the line is 15 ohms and the reactance is 120mH, then find the following:
(i) The expression for current.
(ii) The instant when the dc offset current is minimum.
(iii) If this fault is cleared by a circuit breaker, then find the instantaneous value of the
interrupting current if the speed of the circuit breaker is 3 cycles.

5. a) What is the meaning of "Point of Stable Operation" for a synchronous generator? Explain with 4
relevant diagrams.
b) A 60 Hz generator is supplying 60% of Pmax to an Infinite bus through a reactive network. A fault
8
occurs which increases the reactance of the network between the generator internal voltage and the
infinite bus by 400%. When the fault is cleared the maximum power that can be delivered is 80% of
the original maximum value. Determine the critical clearingangie for the condition described.
c) Explain equal area criteria and its relevance in circuit breaker selection.
