Concave and Convex

Mirrors
Science 10
Quarter 2
Lesson 15
Sir Naz
Objectives
1. Distinguish between converging and diverging
mirrors
2. Recognize images formed by concave and convex
mirrors
3. Identify practical uses of concave and convex mirrors
RECALL
What are the characteristics of images
formed by a plane mirror?
ANSWERS
1. Image is virtual (located behind the mirror);
2. Same size as the object;
3. Same orientation as the object (upright or erect); and
4. Same distance from the mirror as the object
Ways in which Rays are Grouped in Light Beams
A curve mirror is a reflecting
surface in which its surface is
a section of a sphere. There
are two kinds of curved
mirrors, the concave and
convex mirrors.

LET’s EXPLORE
Look at your
reflection at the two
surfaces of a spoon.
What do you see?
Why do you think
this happens?

Two Kinds of Spherical Mirrors
Concave Mirror
1. Reflective surface bulges away
from the light source
2. It reflects light inward to one
focal point. It is used to focus
light
3. It is called Converging Mirror
because the parallel incident
rays converge or
meet/intersect at a focal
point after reflection.
4. It is used to focus light.
Examples
1. Mirrors used in
automobile head
lights
2. Shaving mirrors
3. Searchlights.
4. Microscopes

Convex Mirror
• reflective surface bulges towards
the light source
• It is called Diverging Mirror
because the parallel incident rays
diverge after reflection. When
extending the reflected rays
behind the mirror, the rays
converge at the focus behind the
mirror
• Convex mirrors reflect light
outwards; therefore, they are not
used to focus light.
EXAMPLES
• Rear view mirror in vehicles,
ATMs

NOTE:
1. Concave mirrors can produce both real and virtual
images depending on the distance from the mirror
to the object and the curvature of the mirror.
2. Convex mirrors produce only virtual images.
Which mirror is concave? Which on is convex?

Images Formed by
Reflecting Mirrors
Definition of Terms
1. Center of Curvature (C)
➢The center of the sphere of which
the mirror is part.
➢Its distance from the mirror is
known as the radius.
2. Vertex (V)
➢center of the reflecting surface of
the mirror
3. Principal Axis (P)
➢The line drawn through the center
of curvature and the vertex of the
mirror
Definition of Terms
4. Focal Point/ Principal Focus (F)
➢The point between the center of the curvature and vertex.
➢The focal point (F) of a concave mirror is the point at which a parallel
beam of light is "focused" after reflection in the mirror.
➢For a convex mirror the focal point is the point from which light
appears to have originated after reflection from the mirror.

NOTE:
Its distance from the mirror is known as the focal length (f).
C F V V F C
NOTE
• Consider a ray of light parallel to
the principal axis of a concave
mirror. After reflection, this ray
will pass through the focus of
the mirror.

• This ray follows the law of

reflection that The normal to
the mirror surface at (D) must
pass through the center of
curvature C as the normal must
be a radius of the sphere of
which the mirror forms a part.
Extending What We Know?
1. What type of mirror do dentists usually use to clearly see the
images of our teeth? Why?
2. What kind of curved mirror do you see in most of the department
stores? Why do they use such kind of mirror?
Answers
• A dentist’s mirror is a concave mirror because the image appears
larger or magnified, making it easier for the dentist to see the details
of the object (teeth). This happens because the object (teeth) is
located between the mirrors focal point and the vertex or optical
center of the mirror.

• Most of the department stores use convex mirrors because it gives a

wider range of view.
Knowledge Check
True or False
1. The center of curvature is the point where reflecting rays
from incident rays parallel to the principal axis converge.
2. Concave mirrors are also known as converging mirrors.
3. A concave mirror produces both real and virtual image.
4. Convex mirrors are used in car headlights.
5. Vertex is the center of the reflecting surface of the mirror
