GRAMMAR
Noun じゃありません
Noun じゃありません (ja arimasen)
To negate a statement of the form X wa Y desu, where Y is a noun, you
replace desu with ja arimasen.

やまださんはがくせいじゃありません。Mr. Yamada is not a student.


Yamada san wa gakusee ja arimasen.

***Ja in ja arimasen is a contraction of dewa. In written


Japanese, the uncontracted form is more common.
Affirmative:
(X は) Y です。 X is Y.
X wa Y desu.

Negative:
(X は) Y じゃありません。 X is not Y.
X wa Y ja arimasen..
Translate the following sentences.
Example. She is not a Filipino. Kanojo wa firipin-jin ja
arimasen.
1. Mary is a Japanese.
2. Yamamoto is a teacher.
3. I am an international student.
4. Tonkatsu is not a fish.
5. Mr. Smith is not a British.
ANSWER:
1.メアリさんは にほんじん です。 Mearii
san wa Nihonjin desu.
2. やまもとさんは せんせい です。Yamamoto
San wa sensee desu.
3. わたしは りゅうがくせい です。 Watashi wa
ryuugakusee desu.
4. とんかつは さかな じゃありません。Tonkatsu
wa sakana ja arimasen.
5. すみすさんは いぎりすじん じゃありません。
Sumisu san wa Igirisujin ja arimasen.
Anata wa Nihonjin desu ka?
あなたはにほんじんですか?
Are you a Japanese?

If the answer is YES-


Hai. Watashi wa Nihonjin desu.

If the answer is NO-


Iie. Watashi wa Nihonjin ja
arimasen.
