Can anyone do a recap of what we Ma’am our topic yesterday was all about adjective.
had discussed yesterday? What is Adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun.
adjective? For example: There are three small black wooden chairs
in the room. The adjectives three small black wooden
are modifies the noun chairs. And the adjectives is
before the noun. There are also that the adjectives are
after the pronoun and noun. For example: The food was
hot and delicious. The food is the noun and the
adjectives are hot and delicious.
Okay, very good class you must
remember those techniques in
knowing how the adjectives modifies.

B. Motivation

Before we start, let’s have an activity

first. We will do it by playing a game
“Number substitution cypher”. All you
need to do is to change the number
into a letter to create a word.
According to the sequence of the
letter.

1 3 20 9 22 5 1 3 20 9 22 5
A C T I V E

16 1 19 19 9 22 5 16 1 19 19 9 22 5
P A S S I V E

That activity has something to do with our

discussion today, because our topic is all
about Active and Passive Voice.

Activity

Okay, class I want you to listen carefully as I

read the scenario;

“John saw a pretty girl. He went to talk to

her. Her husband arrived. The husband hit
John on the nose.”

1. What did the husband do? The husband hit John on the nose.
(Active voice is used in the
answer.)
2. What happened to John? John was hit on the nose by the husband.
(Passive Voice is used in the
answer)

Notice on the sentences on the board.

Analyze its difference. It tells whether it is in
the form of active or passive voice. That is
what we are going to discuss now.

Analysis
Let us identify what is Voice.

Voice is the quality of verb that shows

whether the subject is the doer or receiver of
the action.

What is the difference between active and

passive voice?

What is Active voice? Please everybody read.

Active voice is used to indicate that the subject of the

sentence is the doer of the action.
Okay, In active voice the subject is the doer
of the action.

Let’s start with a very simple sentence.

The boy kicked the ball.

S V DO

In this sentence, the subject is the boy who

does the action kicked since the subject is the
doer of the action and the verb kicked has a
direct object, we can say that the verb is in
the active voice.

Another examples:

1. The student writes the winning essay.

2. Alexander Graham Bell invented the

telephone.

3. The chef prepared a delicious meal.

What are the subjects in the given sentence? Students, Alexander Graham Bell, Chef.

Correct! Observe that the subject’s students,

Alexander Graham Bell and chef are the doer
of the action.

What are the verbs? Writes, invented, prepared.

Very good! Those verbs are transitive verb

with direct objects, when the subject is in the
sentences the doer the action and the verb
has a direct object, we can say that the verb
is in the active voice.

Can you follow? Yes Ma’am.

In active voice, the subject is the doer of the

action.

While in passive it is what? Please every - Passive voice is used when the subject is the receiver of
body read. the action.

By this time the subject becomes the

receiver. Take a look on the first example,

Active voice: The boy kicked the ball.

S V DO

By this time the subject is going to be the

ball.

What happened to the ball? The ball was kicked by the boy.
Good. Who kicked the ball? The boy.

Passive Voice: The ball kicked by the boy.

Now, study the following sentences:

1. The winning essay was written by a

students.
2. The telephone was invented by
alexander Graham Bell.
3. A delicious meal was prepared by the
chef.
In each sentences above, you will observe
that the subjects become the receiver
instead of being the doer of the action. If the
subject is the receiver of the action it is made
up of Is/are + past participle of the
verb(simple present tense)and Was/were +
past participle verb (simple tense).

Is it clear? Yes Ma’am.

Okay, let’s have a game, I will group you into
two groups then each group should Identify
the voice of the verb in each sentence and
then you choose the two voices written on
the board the left side will be the active and
right side is the passive voice.

1. Raul presented an interesting 1. Active

sentence.
2. Baseball was played by Joseph. 2. Passive
3. Martin removed the old pants. 3. Active
4. The national budget was approved by 4. Passive
congress.
5. She cooked the breakfast. 5. Active

Excellent! Let’s move on in changing passive

voice. Study the following changes.

Active Voice
1. The mother carried the baby.
2. Father repaired the old chair.
3. Carlo interviewed the school
president.

Passive Voice.
1. The baby was carried by the mother.
2. The old chair was repaired by the
father.
3. The school president was interviewed
by Carlo.

What happened to the subjects, verbs and The subject mother, father and Carlo became the
direct objects in the active voice? receiver in the by-phrase in the active voice. The action
word carried, repaired and interviewed became verb
phrases.
Very well said!
I’m glad that you understand our topic today.
So let’s give ourselves a round of applause.

Abstraction
When can you say that the sentence is in the A verb has a direct object is in the active voice. If the
active or passive voice? subject is the receiver of the action, the verb is in the
passive voice.

How will you change the sentences from In changing a sentence from active to passive, the direct
active to passive? object becomes the subject or the doer using by-phrase
in passive voice.

Exactly! Any questions, clarification about No, Ma’am.
