LESSON
Computer Maintenance

Computer maintenance involves keeping your computer in good working

condition or maintain its operational state. In other words, it’s a series of
maintenance activities and procedures that help keep the software and hardware up-
to-date and operation.

Computer Maintenance Plan is a list of the predefined procedures and

activities necessary to keep a computer in good condition. Computer needs to
maintain regularly to prevent future errors and damage.
The computer is a key component of digital communication. The hardware
and software should match the minimum requirement to run the machine smoothly.
To run properly, you need to handle with care the computer system properly to avoid
system failure or loss of computer data
Maintenance Plan
Here is the list of computer maintenance plan:
 Checking for computer log files
 Assessing space on a hard disk drive
 Examining the permissions of the computer folder
 Computer temperature monitoring
 Ensure the appropriate redundancy of computer systems
 Examination of security features
 Reviewing the cleaning of the computer
 Setting security software patches
 Reading computer logs for security alerts or proof of computer
hacking attempts
 Check and update anti-virus software in your computer
 Updating critical service packages and software update
 Perform frequent thorough back-ups to ensure critical data can be
recovered from storage when a device fails.

Computer Maintenance Checklist

The following is a list of simple maintenance measures that you can take if you
want to try to boost the efficiency of your computer. (For Windows only):
Step 1: Anti-virus
Update and scan your computer with anti-virus
How you do a scan depends on the program you use, but most of them have
very simple instructions right from the beginning. If you know that there is a
problem better scan your computer using windows defender, you may use
another reliable free anti-virus on the net. So, be very cautious about
installing an anti-virus because you think it will help your machine achieve a
better performance, yet it can get worse.

Step 2: Anti-spyware/anti-malware
Usually, anti-virus conducts a spyware test. Spyware detection apps, Malware
Bytes Pro, Super Anti-spyware, and Spybot have several options. Search and
destroy are recommended. It also promises to protect your computer from
possible intrusions since it will prevent trouble or harm thus save you a lot of
time.

Step 3: Keep your recycle bin empty

Even if you have erased anything that does not necessarily mean it’s
gone, if it’s in the recycle bin then it is still in your hard drive and still
consuming a space of memory. Ccleaner will automatically clear the recycle
bin but better do it manually just in case by mistake anything important ends
up in there.
A recycle bin icon should be on your screen, if not it can be found on
the Start Tab. Just open the folder, then check what is in and click the empty
bin button.
Step 4: Disk and Application/Software Cleanup
This is another simple to follow step, as it built Windows. Go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tool and you can find it, Choose the drive
you want to search (your main hard drive would have no issues with the one
that is only used for data storage) and let it go. Things like automatically
cached web pages, temporary files that have never been deleted, outdated
service pack backups, and so on. It then shows a list of what it has been
identified, and how much memory each object takes up. You can pick which
one you want to delete but better the entire files.
Delete any unwanted or unused extensions, plug-ins, or add-ons to an
Internet browser.

Step 5: Defragment
This software comes in Windows, it’s in the same position as the application
for Disk Cleanup. It’s a simple process, pick a drive, ask for analysis and click
if it says needs defragmentation.

Step 6: Configure your startup

It is a bit complicated but very useful. You need to open the program, type
‘MSConfig’, and click OK. When it opens, go into the ‘Startup’ page. Below
is a list of everything that runs automatically when your computer on. If you
are not sure what something is, it is best left alone but there should be some
familiar names like iTunes or MSN should be there too.

Step 7: Review Windows Updates, Update plugins, and basic applications

Review Microsoft Updates, including weekly patches and the new Service
Packs.
Some of the applications for update:
 Browsers – Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Opera
 Messaging – Skype, Pidgin, Digsby, Google Talk, Thunderbird,
Trillian, AIM, Yahoo IM, and Windows Live Messenger
 Media – Quicktime, Audacity, iTunes, Spotify, Songbird, Hulu, VLC,
KMPlayer, K-Lite Codecs, GOM, AIMP, foobar2000, Winamp,
MediaMonkey, CCCP
 Runtime – NET, Silverlight, Adobe Air, Shockwave, Adobe Flash,
Java,
 Graphics – Picasa, GIMP, Infranview, XnView, Inkscape, FastStone
Paint and NET
 Documents – SumatraPDF, Foxit Reader, CutePDF, LibreOffice,
PDF Creator OpenOffice, and Adobe Reader,
 Security – Avast, AVG, Norton, McAfee, Malware Bytes, Ad-Aware,
Spybot, Super Anti-Spyware, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.
 Cloud Storage or Backup – Google Drive, Mozy, Microsoft SkyDrive
Carbonite, Dropbox, etc.
 Utilities – CDBurnerXP, TrueCrypt, Revo, Launcy, WinDirStat,
Glary, InfraRecorder, TeamViewer, ImgBurn, Auslogics Disk Defrag,
RealVNC and TeraCopy
 Compression – WinRAR, 7-Zup, PeaZIP

Step 8: Check the file backup plan and if necessary, build device recovery
disks
Make sure you have a backup plan for files, and if available, build device
recovery disks.

Step 9: Clean and dust inside a system unit (check fans and computer
temp.)
Better system images and high performance are always a good idea by
keeping it clean and dust-free.

Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a Microsoft software tool initially introduced with Windows
98 and used with all subsequent versions of Windows. It allows users to remove files
that are no longer needed or that can be deleted safely. It can help to speed up and
improve computer performance by removing unnecessary files, including temporary
files. It is an excellent maintenance task when you run a Disk Cleanup at least once
a month.
Disk Cleanup may delete temporary Internet files (associated with Internet
Explorer), downloaded program files, and offline webpages. You can also empty the
recycle bin then delete temporary files and thumbnails.
To open a Microsoft Disk Cleanup just follow the steps:
Windows 10 and Windows 8
1. To open the Power User task menu, press Windows key + X
2. Click the Run option under the menu

Replacement of consumables
Consumables can be described as any parts or components that need to be
replaced regularly so that the computer or system can perform all its functions. The
ink should be replaced or refilled in a printer, for example before it subsides.
Additional consumables include thermal paste, ink wastepaper or pad and lubricants

Cleaning and dusting your computer

Dust inside the computer can slow down your computer’s performance and
can cause some components to fail.
Steps:
1. Gather the tools you need. Compressed air and screwdriver are required.
2. Shut down and unplug your computer.
3. Remove all the peripherals and cables.
4. Choose a suitable workspace. If you have not cleaned your computer for
so long, better to transfer first to a suitable workspace.
5. Open your computer. Make sure your computer is properly shutdown
and unplug from the outlet
6. Prepare to clean. After opening the computer, use compressed air. Wear
masks in cleaning the internal parts of the computer. You can discharge
static electricity with an anti-static wrist strap and mat. Or just rub the
metal case to avoid ESD.
7. Start dusting. Using a compressed air blow the dust inside the computer.
Typically, start at the upper part of the system unit is a good idea than
going downward. By this, all the dust will be collected at the lower part
and can easily sweep out.
a. Make sure compressed air remains upright. If inverted, it can be
released as a liquid that can cause serious damage to your
computer.
b. Compressed air freezes when it leaves the can; don't let frost form
on your chips.
c. If the PC is very dusty, try not to breathe and take it out of doors
before using the compressed air.
8. Make sure that the heatsink fan is clean. The heat sink sits over the
processor, it is a metal that absorbs heat. The processor will overheat, may
degrade its performance, and permanently damage if the fan is not working
properly.
9. Thoroughly check the entire system unit. Once you are sure that this
is thoroughly cleaned, replace the sides carefully. Do not try to force them
into place.
10. Clean your working area. You may use a small vacuum and clean the
area around the computer.
11. Close your computer. After dusting cover the system unit makes sure you
screw its cover. When the computer is properly shutdown return its normal
position and connect the cord and other cables.

A clean machine runs much better and can last much longer than
clogged with dust and dirt.
