QUESTION 1

A batch of 12 cm diameter disks with a thickness of 4 mm are to be molded from acrylonitrile-

butadiene-styrene (ABS) in a four-cavity mold.
Determine:

(a) The recommended runner volume percentage

Part volume = Total Projected Area x Thickness

= 3.14 x 62 x 0.4 = 45.2 = 45 cm3
From Table Q1(a), part volume between 32 - 64 cm3 and runner % is between 19 - 28%
Therefore using interpolation;

y = 24.34 = 24%

(b) Total projected shot area [3 marks]

Projected area = 3.14x62 = 113 cm2

4 x 1.24 x 113 = 560.48 = 560.5 cm2

(c) Maximum cavity pressure [2 marks]

From Table Q1(c), Injection pressure for ABS is 1000 bars, Therefore
Max cavity pressure = 1000 bars /2 = 500 bars = 500 x 105 N/m2
(d) Maximum clamping force [3 marks]

F = (560.5 x 10-4) x 500 x 105 N = 2802 kN

(e) The appropriate machine size.[2 marks]

From Table Q1(b), the appropriate machine would be the one with a maximum clamp force
5000 kN

(f) Charge position in cm, if screw diameter is 32mm [5 marks]

The required shot size = 4 x 1.24 (113 x 0.4) = 224.19 = 224 cm3

224 x / 3.14 (1.62) = 27.86 = 28 cm

(g) The estimated fill time [5 marks]

tf = 2 Vs Pj / pj s
tf = 2 x (224 x 10-6) x (100 x 106) / (63 x 103) = 0.69 = 0.7s
