QUESTION 1
a) A block is immersed at 4.0 m from the surface of water at level 1, and then a particular
block is brought down to 8.0 m from the surface of water at level 2 as shown in Figure
Q1(a). In this condition, state your argument on how the absolute pressure on the block
alters.

Level 2
Figure Q1(a)
In the above expression, Δh is one component of the gauge pressure and refers to the
distance of the object from the surface of water. As the object is submerged deeper, it will
experience a greater gauge pressure and thus a greater absolute pressure.
If Δh were doubled from 4.0 m to 8.0 m, this would certainly cause the gauge pressure to
double. However, it would not cause the absolute pressure to double. There is still the
atmospheric pressure to take into account, which maintains the same value in both cases.
Since we are increasing the gauge pressure, we know that absolute pressure will increase,
but not to the extent of doubling. Thus, we know that it will increase slightly.

b) The water is flowing in a pipeline. However, the diameter of the pipeline is diminished
by a factor of 6. Using your knowledge of physics, how the velocity of water must be
altered to maintain a steady rate.
2
To see how a change of radius affects the velocity of a moving fluid, we'll need to take
the continuity equation into account.
Q=vA
Even though the radius is not shown in the above expression, remember that area is
related to radius.
A = πr2
Or put another way:
A ∝ r2
When substituted into the continuity equation:
Q ∝ v r2
As the above proportionality shows, if the radius were to decrease by a factor of 3
(diameter/2 = 6/2), this would cause the flow rate to decrease by a factor of 9. To
counteract this drop in flow rate, the velocity term would need to increase by a factor of
9.

c) Water flows into a pipe with a radius of 3.0 m at a speed of 14.0 m/s. Determine the
speed of the fluid as it exits the pipe if the other end of the pipe has a cross sectional
area of 9000 cm2.
Continuity equation,
A1 v1 = A2 v2
v2 = A1 v1 / A2 = π (3)2 (14/0.9) = 439.6 m/s

d) A water tank that filled with water (ρ = 1 × 103 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚3 ) is placed 40.0 m above a water
valve of a house. Given the tank is cylindrical shape with radius of 1.0 m.
i. Determine the water pressure between the valve and the water tank.
P = ρgh = 1000 (9.81) (40.0) = 3.92 x 105 N/m2

ii. Determine the average force, F, on the valve.
F = PA = (3.92 x 105) π (2/2)2 = 12.3 N

QUESTION 2
a) By using your own words, define the Zeroth Law of thermodynamics and its
applications in real life.
Zeroth law of thermodynamics - if two thermodynamic systems are each in thermal
equilibrium with a third one, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other.
Application - hot coffee becomes cold after some time
- ice will melt and hot water will cold to room temperature
- thermometer for measuring body temperature

b) Adam and Nonny are instructed to investigate the effect of thermal expansion to a
copper rod and sphere which 50.0 cm long and diameter of 10.0 cm, respectively. They
found the rod elongated to 50.15 cm, while the sphere expanded to 550 cm3 after heating
it to a certain temperature from a room temperature. Determine the final temperature if
the α and β are 17 × 10−6 (𝐶 ° )−1 and 50 × 10−6 (𝐶 ° )−1, respectively.

c) It is good to check the tire pressure before a road trip to ensure the safety of the car. In
Figure Q2(c), the tire pump shows a measurement of 220 kPa and each tire is filled
with 10 L of air at 20°C.
Figure Q2(c)
i. Determine the final volume of the tire if the temperature within the tire rises to
50°C after 200 km journey. Given the β of air is 3400 × 10−6 (𝐶 ° )−1.
