1. Determine the elongation of the composite bar of uniform cross-


sectional area of 300 mm2 loaded as shown in Fig. No. Take EAl = 70
GPa, EBrass = 105 GPa and ESteel = 200 GPa.

2. A rod 150 cm long and of diameter 2.0 cm is subjected to an axial pull of


20 kN. If the modulus of elasticity of the material of the rod is 2 X 10 5
N/mm2. Determine i) The Stress ii) The Strain iii) The elongation of the
rod.
3. An aluminium bar of uniform cross sectional area 300 mm is subjected
to axial forces as shown in Fig. No. Determine the force ‘P’required for
equilibrium of the bar. Also determine the change in length of the bar.
Take E = 70 GPa.

4. A bar of length 1.2 m extends through 3 mm under the action of an axial


pull of 2.4 kN. Compute the strain in the material, if diameterof the bar is
20 mm. Find the stress in the bar.
5. The Cross-section of beam is rectangle 60 mm X 80 mm deep. The
maximum shear stress in the section is 45 MPa. Calculate shear stress
at a section: i) 40 mm above N.A. ii) 20 mm below N.A.
6. A beam of circular section of diameter d and length L is a simply
supported at ends, carries central point load W = 2 kN, L = 4 m. What
should be the value of diameter d, so that maximum stresses in beam
does not exceed 80 MPa.
7. The Cross-section of beam is rectangle 60 mm X 80 mm deep. The
maximum shear stress in the section is 50 MPa. Calculate shear stress
at a section: i) 40 mm above N.A. ii) 20 mm below N.A.
8. A beam of circular section of diameter d and length L is a simply

should be the value of diameter d, so that maximum stresses in beam
does not exceed 80 MPa.

3. Determine the diameter of a solid shaft which will transmit 275 kW at 300
rpm. The maximum shear stress should not exceed 30 N / mm 2 and twist
should not be more them 1° in a shaft length of 2 m. The modulus of

4. A hollow shaft with diameter ratio 3/5 is required to transmit 450 kW at

5. A bar of length 4 m when used as Simply supported beam and subjected to
UDL of 50 kN/m over the whole span, deflects 15 mm at center. Determine the
crippling load when it is used as a column with following conditions: i) Both
ends pin-joined ii) One end fixed and other end hinged iii) Both ends fixed.

over the whole span, deflects 15 mm at center. Determine the crippling
load when it is used as a column with following conditions: i) Both ends
