SYLLABUS
4. SUBJECT: Mathematics
8. DURATION : 15 weeks
To enable students achieve a high level of competence in trigonometry and calculus with
emphasis on their application in solving problems in agriculture and natural resources.
TRIGONOMETRY
i. Angles: Measures of angles (degrees and radians), arc length and area of a
sector, positive and negative angles, co-terminal angles
ii. Trigonometric Functions: Sine, Cosine, tangent, cotangent, cosecant and secant
functions, odd and even functions
iii. Trigonometric Identities: Basic identities, proving identities
iv. Trigonometric Functions of Compound angles: Addition and subtraction
formulas, double angle and half angle formulas
v. Sum, Difference and Product Formulas of sine and cosine functions
vi. Graphs of Trigonometric Functions: (amplitude, period and phase shift),
sketching graphs
vii. Inverse Trigonometric Functions : Principal and general values
viii. Trigonometric Equations: Particular and General Solutions of equations
B. DIFFERENTIATION
i. limits and continuity of functions, tangent lines, gradient of a curve
ii. The Derivative: definition, differentiation form first principles, notation of
derivatives, repeated differentiation
iii. Differentiation Formulas and Techniques: The power rule, the chain rule, the
product and quotient rules, Implicit Differentiation, Derivatives of
Trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions
iv. The Derivatives and Rates of Change: Average and instantaneous rates of
change,
v. The Differential and Increments: Approximations and small changes.

vi. The derivatives and Graphs: Increasing and decreasing functions, concavity and
inflection points, local and absolute extrema (minima and maxima), first and
second derivative tests.
C. INTEGRATION
i. Antiderivatives and Indefinite Integrals: Definitions and notation, Determination
of equations of functions from derivatives.
ii. The Integrals of Trigonometric, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
iii. The Definite Integrals: Definition and notation, the concept and Evaluation of
limits applied to integrals
iv. Integration Formulas and Techniques: The substitution rule, integration by parts,
partial fraction technique.
v. Applications: (areas and volumes): evaluation of areas and volumes of
revolutions.
