EXPERIMENTNO:______ DATE:__________

AIM: To Test DC compound generator for

external and internal load characteristic.

OBJECTIVES:

After performing this experiment you will be able to;

- Measure the effect of change of load current on the

Terminal voltage of dc compound generator at
constant speed.
- Determine external and internal characteristics of a
dc cumulatively compound generator.
- Determine external characteristics of a differential
compound generator.

MACHINE SPECIFICATION:

APPRATUS:

Sr.No. DESCRIPTION SPECIFICATION REQ.QTY.

THEORY:

The terminal voltage Vf of dc shunt and series generator

decrease as the load on its Increases.
These generator are not suitable where constant voltage on
load is essential.
This can be achieved by adding a series field winding on the
pole core and it connected in series with armature.
This dc generator is know as compound generator.

DC compound generator are of two type:

a) A dc cumulatively compound generator in which series field
flux or mmf helps the shunt field flux or mmf and.
b) A dc differentially compound generator in which series field
flux or mmf opposes the shunt field flux or mmf.

Characteristics of cumulative compound generator:

a) In dc cumulatively compound generator the series field mmf

or flux helps the shunt field mmf or flux such that. In the case
of flux or level compound cumulative generator it produces the
same terminal voltage V at rated full load as well as at no
load.(curve AB)

b) In case of over compound cumulative generator its terminal

voltage V at rated full load is greater than its voltage at no
load (curve AC)
c) In case of under compound cumulative generator its
terminal voltage V at rated full load is slightly less than its
terminal voltage at no load (curve AD)
Characteristics of differentially compound generator:

 The external characteristics of differentially compound

generator is shown in fig.(curves AE) the emf is build up like
shunt generator at no load.

 Now if load current IL is increased the opposing series field

flux increase as a result Ǿ T = Ǿsh = Ǿse is sharply reduced so,
the E at constant speed is slightly reduced. As a result the
terminal voltage VT = E – drop is also rapidly reduced.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. Speed of the generator must be kept constant throughout

the experiment.
2. Load current should not exceed the rated value of the
generator.

PROCEDURE:

1.Connect ckt. as shown in diagram.

2.Check Field rheostat of Motor Rho. for MIN. Position.

3.Check for Generator field rheostat Rho. for Max. position.

4.Check Load Bank for Off position.

5.Switch on DC power supply.

6.Run the DC Prime mover of Generator with help of 3 point

DC starter.
7.Adjust the speed of Set to the rated value of Generator
Speed using Field Rheostat of Motor.( Keep the speed
constant throughout the experiment with the help of same.)

8.Vary the field rheostat of Generator from Max and adjust

rated terminal voltage of Generator. Rheostat setting at this
position should not be disturbed for this set of readings.

9. Switch On the load bank.

10.Change the load current by varying the load, and note

Down corresponding terminal voltage. Take readings
covering the range from no load to full Load.

11. Generator output / Motor input
