Bo Peep
We are a small sheep farm with a flock of 150 registered white sheep. Our sheep lamb from May to January.
Lambs born in sub-zero weather for the Easter market and other religious holidays need extra care. Lambing is
the time of greatest risk for the mother ewe, and although lambing in warm weather alleviates that risk, the
increased risk of disease and predators requires additional care for both ewe and lamb. The result is a very
seasonal lamb rearing workload. Duties and Tasks: Perform all work as directed. Works closely with the owner
to evaluate and develop the ranch infrastructure and adopt the company's operating procedures for the
operation. Ability to work outdoors in all types of inclement weather. Care for live animals which may include
cows, sheep, pigs, goats, horses and other equines, dogs and any other animals housed on the ranch. Duties
may include feeding, watering, herding, herding, neutering, tagging, weighing, catching and loading animals.
Maintain a BCS of 5 or better in 75% of unit ewes with a minimum of BCS 3. Track gains in breeding stock,
feeders and replacement ewes during all phases of development. Complete the activities listed in the Sheep
Events Calendar within the specified times. Can help maintain animal records; examine animals for diseases
and injuries; assist in childbirth; and administer medications, vaccines or insecticides as appropriate. Ability to
drive the tractor and maintain pastures between pastures. You can help the veterinarian or other professionals
in order to care for the animals. May clean and maintain animal housing areas. Ability to pull and stack hay.
Ability to work overnight during calving season, if required. It requires the ability to develop the knowledge,
respect and skills to engage with those from other cultures or backgrounds. Keep all unit fences, sheep pens,
facilities and equipment neat, clean and in good repair. Keep the farm clean and tidy and ready for any state,
supplier or customer inspections at all times. License: Maintain an active, unrestricted NYS driver's license.
Education: A high school education or equivalent is required. Experience: At least 6 months of experience
working on a sheep ranch and operating large farm equipment is required.
