CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Technology is one of the main reasons out there today that our lives are better

and much easier to deal with every day, we may fail and struggle to survive our daily

lives every single day but technology is always there to help us for. This is one of the

main reason our lives are so much easier right now, because of what technology makes

us and how we adapt it daily to surpass our limits as a human being.

This is why studies have been invented and used in decades to find truth in every

hypothesis, statements and perception, Automotive is one of the specific areas where

study is made. One of the struggles of being and Automotive Mechanic or Student is

about our tools, We simply know how to work on them but what if the main reason

behind it is we cannot afford to buy it, This is why we chose out title as bearing/pulley

puller, a study about using a certain tool built by a mechanic for certain reasons such as

it is expensive in the market and building one could be handy and save of money. This

CHAPTER 2

Review of the Related Literature Studes and Prior Art

This chapter discusses related literate and researches conducted regarding bearing

puller remover tool.

Bearings are "parts that assist objects' rotation". They support the shaft that

rotates inside the machinery. It supports the rotating shafts of the wheels, gears,

turbines, rotors, etc. in those machines, allowing them to rotate more smoothly.

Bearings are even used in household appliances that we all use every day, such as

refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and air-conditioners. Bearing remover/installer can

be used to push bearings into place or to hammer out bearings/races after being

pressed into place (Shepard, 2013). Machines that use bearings include automobiles,

airplanes, electric generators and so on. In this way, all sorts of machines require a great

many shafts for rotation, which means bearings are almost always used, to the point

where they have become known as "the bread and butter of the machine industry". At

first glance, bearings may seem like simple mechanical parts, but we could not survive

without bearings (Bureau of Naval Weapons, 1965).

A bearing puller is a tool which is used to remove components such as bearings, gears

and pulleys from a shaft or a recess. The puller securely grips the component with

specially designed jaws before driving it off the shaft. Pullers are used in every industry

for safely and effectively dismounting bearings. Whether you’re working in the

automotive industry or the food and beverage industry, a bearing pulley could facilitate

easy dismounting of your bearings and other components. A bearing puller can

efficiently remove the stuck component from the shaft or recess, without causing any

damage to the shaft or other surrounding components. This helps to promote the

uptime and reliability of your machinery. (Duffy, Heard & Wright, 2017).

Generally, bearing puller can efficiently remove the stuck component from the shaft or

recess, without causing any damage to the shaft or other surrounding components. This

helps to promote the uptime and reliability of any machinery.

ABSTRACT

Accordingly, inventors have developed numerous tools having utility as bearing

pullers. Generally speaking, a bearing-engaging frame has an internally threaded

aperture through which extends an elongate externally threaded screw member. The

screw bears against the shaft that carries the bearing that is to be pulled so that rotation

of the screw effects rearward travel of the frame and hence of the bearing due to the

axial immobility of the shaft. There are many variations of this principal, with tools being

adapted to fit differing shafts and bearings.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

The present invention has only three primary parts, said parts being a rigid "U"

shaped frame member having a pair of transversely spaced leg members that bear

against a pole piece of the alternator, an elongate externally threaded screw member

that is rotatably mounted within an unthreaded bore formed in the frame member, and

a bearing gripper member that screw threadedly engages the screw member. The

bearing gripper is specifically configured to receive the slip rings and bearing of the

alternator assembly. Rotation of the screw effects retraction of the gripper member and

the bearing it grips, but the screw does not bear against the shaft upon which the

that the flanges 100 may be received over the pulley assembly to be slid inwardly for

engaging the same in the belt receiving groove 32. The set screws 98 are then tightened

and the stud element 102 is screwed inwardly so that its end portion bears against the

Synthesis

Based on the past study gathered, the researchers came up an idea on how to

improve the gadget by its design, develop and construct the performance in sized of the

bearing in removing the gadget. The main role of this is to remove without human help

for driving and less exerting force. It can adapt in basic and simple bearings and also

many other bearings and also such in a pulley of a engine crankshaft or some of other

pulles in our auxillary parts in the engine. The inventors of the bearing puller and

remover tool are the following: Fred T. Colson, James D. King, and Doyce J Wilson.

The first prior art was invented by Fred T. Colson known as Bearing Puller. The

gadget was invented in order to pull both internal and external bearings for easier

mechanical works. The researchers came up with the Idea to use similar concepts on the

prior art 1 using a center shaft to rotate for pulling and applying pressure.

The second prior art was invented by James D. King and the gadget was called

Puller device for removing drum brake and this gadget was invented in order to pull

rusty and stucked up brake drums of drum type of brakes. The researchers came up

with the idea of using the concept of control arms and making it four control arms for

better stability and hold when pulling the brake drum.

The third prior art known as Tool kit for assembly and disassembly of the pulley

bearing of an automobile air conditioner compressor invented by Doyce J Wilson for

also pulling or removing the assembly and disassembly of the pulley bearing of AC

compressor easily without the use of full pressure of man power. The researchers came

up with the idea of using the similar concept of solid type claw for better and

operational purposes.

only bearings but this gadget is also a multipurpose one for it is designed as long as it

could possibly be in order to pull other moving parts such as gears, brake drums and

also pulleys in our automobile. This gadget was made by a center bolt which plays the

part of the shaft rotating and pushing on the center of the bearing or pulley and also

gears that is hard to extract. The jaws are composed and made of hard width of angle

bars which have been cut short and shaped to fit the extension arms that has been

made of light to medium duty flat bars measured by 5 inches. The frame is also made of

angle bars shaped to fit the 2 nuts welded together for the center bolt to rotate to.

Evaluation Procedure

The pilot testing and evaluation procedure was done at ISAT U Main campus,

Burgos St., La Paz, Iloilo City. During the pilot testing there were experts and instructors

present to observe the performance of the gadget. The suggestion was recorded by the

researchers as their bais of revision of the gadget.

In testing for evaluation of the gadget the following were the prcedures to be

considered.

1. Assemble the Bearing Puller Tool

2. Place the Shaft to the center of the bearing and place the 4 jaws to the each

corner designated to grab and hold of the bearing.

3. Using the built in handle of the gadget rotate the shaft clockwise motion for the

shaft to push forward and for the 4 jaws to engage and pull the bearing

extracting it of its place.

4. After using the gadget, clean the tool and put it in your tool box/cabinet.

The Researchers wanted to determine the performance of the gadget in terms of

comfort, durablility, and safety. All details gathered in prior arts by previous researchers

were applied to accomplish this study. The gadget bearing puller is very useful and easy

to use during bearing extraction operation in terms of comfort, safety and performance.

The results showed the safety and performance of the gadget. The researchers wanted

to emphasize that the gadget is high quality, very useful, and requires lesser time and

effort from technician/mechanic during bearing extraction operation of the

automobiles.

Parameters to be Analyzed

Bearing Puller was developed for use the parameters to be analyzed are the

comfort, durability, and safety of the puller to be used in bearing extraction operation.

This could also provide better output compared to others. The comfort is the ability to

bring comfort to work of technician. Durability is the ability of the tools to perform or

operate from light to medium work purpose. Safety is the ability of the gadget to

operate while being safe on work.
