History of the five (5) Gamu Catholic Churches

A. SAINT ROSE OF LIMA PARISH


The Parish church of St Rose of Lima is located infront of Gamu Municipal Hall. The parish is
small composed of 13 Barangays and 3 Poblacion Districts (1,2,3). It is one of the oldest
churches in Isabela dating back in 1596 when Dominican friar created a Diocese of Nueva
Segovia in Lallo, Cagayan. Then many parishes were opened southward reaching Itugod, a
barrio of Gamu.
A first Dominican Priest, Fr. Luis Flores created the mission of San Gabriel of Batarag
1609 which included several town surrounding Gamu. On December 5, 1741 St Rose of Lima
mission and Our Lady of Victorias of Itugod became one unifying town and agreed on Gamu
as its seat of evangelization.
The Dominican Fathers were pastoring the faithful of Gamu for 184 years up to 1922.
The Filipino Diocesan Clergy took over Gamu in May 1922 up to 1952. On December 29,
1949 a strong earthquake hit northern Luzon devastating heavily almost all churches
including the church in Gamu.
The wooden chapel was built next to the ruin of the old church until Fr. Rene Bisaillor
started reinforcing some walls where a new roof was placed. A complete restoration of the
church was accomplish in 1979 during the time of Fr. John Couveur, CICM where a Spanish –
style bell tower was put up with the recovered bricks from the ruins of the convent. Fr. John
stayed in Gamu parish from 1978 – 1993.
To date, a good number of Filipino clergies came to minister the Gamu parish, each one
introduced improvement in the physical structure of the church and the premises to
mention a young and active priest, in the person of Fr. Vener Caperes left a lasting legacy to
the Gamu faithful, a beautifully and a beautiful landscape.
The St Rose of Lima Church offers a stolemn workship place and a breathtaking view for
local devotees and tourist from other places. on the sidetrack is a Pasalubong center in
front of the Municipal Hall where the Ibanag delicacy, “Binallay” is sold.
So, come and see for yourself a workship place where history and the present day has
blended.

OUR LADY OF THE VISITACION OF GUIBANG


The shrine of our Lady of the Visitacion of Guibang is located along the national highway
in barangay Guibang, Gamu, Isabela. At the back of the shrine is the mighty Cagayan River
which regularly overflow its bank, flooding the vast cornfields nearby.
In 1905, a young man found the statue of the Virgin Mary floating on the riverbank near
the place where the shrine is now located. He told the people to pray the rosary always and do
good deeds. Then he decided to give the statue to couple Francisco and Maria Noble. The
statue was enshrined inside their humble hut. They lightened candles in the evening and to
their surprise their hut was filled with the sweet smell of flowers.
The news spread like wildfire. Then as people came to pray respect and venerate the
Blessed Virgin.

Archbishop Carmine Rocco. Then in 1986 the CBCP through its President Ricardo Cardinal Vidal
declared the church of our Lady of Visitacion of Guibang in Gamu, Isabela as a National Shrine.
To date, the catholic faithful, far and near come to the shrine for a pilgrimage during its
feast day on July 2. Likewise, during the Lenten season, it is a very accessible place for visita
iglesia.
