1 Amendment to SPC 213 Trackside Signs

The sections in SPC 213 Trackside Signs are to be amended as follows:

Section 4.2 Warning, Caution and Clearance

signs
Replace Sections 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 in their entirety with the following:

Section 4.2.1 Flashing lights for Warning, Caution and

Clearance signs
Flashing lights shall be fitted as a standard arrangement to all temporary speed signs installed
throughout the TfNSW Metropolitan Heavy Rail Network, to provide better visibility. Warning and
Caution signs shall be placed before the affected portion of track and display the appropriate
speed restriction.

The ‘WARNING’ sign shall be changed to white text on a blue retroreflective background and
have a blue flashing light attached to the top of the sign, to make the sign type readily
identifiable. Text height shall be 130 mm.

The blue ‘WARNING’ sign is differentiated from the yellow ‘CAUTION’ sign to allow train drivers
and track vehicle operators to respond accordingly.

The ‘CAUTION’ sign shall have an amber flashing light attached to the top of the sign and retain
the existing colours of red text on a yellow retroreflective background.

The ‘CLEARANCE’ sign shall have a flashing white light attached to the top of the sign and
retain the existing colours of black text on a white retroreflective background.

Section 4.2.2 Plate details

The dimensions and layout shall be as specified in the updated Figure 9.

Add the following new section after Section 4.8.2:

Section 4.9 Intermediate warning sign

Section 4.9.1 Intermediate warning sign placement
Intermediate warning signs are placed at the departure end of the last station platform between
the WARNING and CAUTION signs to remind drivers and track vehicle operators of an
approaching speed restricted area. They are used in the absence of enough track length to
provide 2500 m warning distance. The signs are standard warning signs with a ‘Distance to
Caution’ sign attached at the bottom, and are placed on the secondary track before it enters the
main line on which the speed applies. Intermediate warning signs shall only be used at locations
where trains travel at a speed of ≤ 40 km/h approaching the sign. MN T 20202 Track
Fundamentals provides details on the use of intermediate warning signs. NPR 713 Placing
Temporary Speed Signs and NSG 604 Indicators and signs published on the RailSafe website
also contain further details regarding the flashing lights.

Section 8.4 ‘No Whistle’ sign

The requirement for the widespread use of the rail traffic whistles by passenger trains on the
TfNSW Metropolitan Heavy Rail Network has considerably diminished over recent years. Their
use has been completely abolished for trains departing from passenger platforms, and there are
significantly more locations where the driver of a train entering a tunnel is not required to sound
the train whistle. The installation of this sign at tunnel entrances formalises these arrangements
and acts as a reminder to the train driver. Unless necessary for safety reasons, rail traffic
whistles shall not be sounded where ‘No Whistle’ signs are located. The Rail Infrastructure
Manager (RIM) shall maintain a register of locations where these signs have been installed.

The dimensions, layout and material shall be as specified in the referenced drawing and the
following figure, ‘No whistle’ sign.

Section 9 ‘Worksite Ahead’ sign

Section 9.1 Placement
‘Worksite Ahead’ warning signs act as a reminder to train drivers that an inner handsignaller is
located ahead. If a platform is located between the inner and outer handsignallers, a ‘Worksite
Ahead’ warning sign shall be placed just beyond the departure end of the platform to allow the
driver to see the sign while stopped at the last platform before the affected portion of track.

The use of this sign shall be as determined by the RIM.
