Introduction

Essential nutrients like carbohydrates, protein, and fats can be found individually or in
combination with each other in the foods we eat. There are simple tests using indicators
that will change colour in the presence of certain nutrients. In this lab, a positive reaction
will show a colour change and means the nutrient is present.

Who stole your airpods?

You took a break from your studies to go shoot some hoops. When you came back
your airpods were gone! Left behind on your desk were some bits of the thief’s
lunch. You remember there were only three people in the room when you left and
this is what they were eating:

Student Lunch/Snack
Jennifer Ham on rye sandwich
Cindy Peanut butter and jam on white bread
Zubai Baked potato with lots of butter

You decide to test the leftover bits of food using various indicators that will
determine what nutrients were present and therefore which snack it came from,
thus catching the culprit.

Before you begin, make a prediction on what TWO main macromolecule nutrients
would you find in each suspects lunch in the chart below:

Student Lunch/Snack TWO Macromolecules:

Jennifer Ham on rye sandwich

Peanut butter and jam on

Cindy
white bread
Baked potato with lots of
Zubai
butter
Procedure:
1. Obtain a test tube rack, 7 medium test tubes, 2 small pieces of brown paper,
grease pencil to label your tubes (we don’t use tape anymore for labels).
2. Label each tube respectively: SS +, SS –, St +, St -, Pro +, Pro -.
3. Follow the instructions at each station to make your “positive control”. The
positive control tells you if the indicator is working and gives you something
to compare your mystery sample to.
4. Record observations of each positive control in the chart below.
5. Follow the instructions at each station to make your “negative control”.
6. Record observations of each negative control provided at the station.

Observations for Positive Controls:

Chemical Test Positive Result Negative Result

Carbohydrate – Simple
Sugar

Carbohydrate – Starch

Protein

Fat

7. Next, perform the same tests on the mystery sample, compare results to
your positive and negative control tubes and record below.

Questions

1. From the data you collected, what nutrients were present at the crime

scene? ___________________________. Based on these results, I think

the thief is __________________.

2. What is the purpose of having control groups for each test in this lab?

3. Suggest a legitimate lunch that would show positive results for ALL tests.

4. Fill in each blank to indicate the function of each type of molecule in

different parts of our body.

a) Our muscle cells are mostly made of _______________

b) Glucose is carried by our blood to all the cells in our body. Our cells use the

glucose for _______________.

c) Lipids are found in fat cells in our bodies. The fat cells store fat molecules to be

used for ______________ if a person cannot get enough food.

d) Lipids are also a main component of our cell _________________.

e) Our bodies do not make starch, but we often eat plant foods which contain starch
which we digest into _____________, the building block that is used to make
starch.
