Electrochemistry

The branch of chemistry that deals with the relationship between

chemical reactions and electricity. It targets;
▪ Chemical reactions produced by passing electric current
through an electrolyte.
▪ The production of electric current through chemical reaction.

Based on the interconversion of electric and chemical energy.

Electrochemistry – basic definitions

Anode and Cathodes:

Charged electrodes.
Electrode:
An electrical conductor used to contact a nonmetallic part of a circuit.
Electrolyte:
A substance that dissociates into ions in solution and acquires the capacity to
conduct electricity.
Electric energy:
Energy generated by moving electrons.
Chemical energy:
Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds.
