Creating a Catalog for a 3-Way Valve

To create a Catalog first we need to go to the World level & then create
- CATA (Catalog) – A Catalog is the highest level element created below the
world as a title to denote each discipline & the standard used & various
disciplines. For eg. ANSI, BS, DIN, etc. etc... Create a CATA called TEST_CATA
for training purpose.
- SECT (Section) – This is next in the hierarchy below CATA.
Each Section comprises of the different component. For
eg… ELBOW, FLANGE, etc. etc..
- CATE (Category) – Next in the hierarchy is CATE. This
comprises of the different tags or variations of that
particular component. For eg. Valves with different tag
nos.

Procedure to create a Category:

1. In the members list select the CATA & then the SECT.
2. Go to Create menu select Category & then for
Components.
3. Fill in the details on the form showing the valve tag no
at the top.
4. Change the Use option to Create in both the P Point
Set & the Geom Set.
5. Copy the valve tag from the top, type PS & paste the
valve tag beside it. Do the same for GS.
6. In the Parameters Description section give name labels
so that you type in the appropriate dimension for that
label.
7. After typing the description click Insert After or any
other appropriate option as required. Once all labels
have been entered click Apply.
8. On clicking Apply you will find in the members list TEXT lines created with 2 extra files at the
bottom called GMSE & PTSE for the geo set & the points set.
9. Next in the list is to give the dimensions for our component. For this go to Create, select
Component. The following 2 dialog boxes appear.
10. Give the name/tag number for that valve & in the Generic type select the type of valve, in our case
it’s a Three Way Valve as shown in pic.

11. Click Apply & you will see in the Members list an SCOM is created.
12. Go to Display in the menu & select Component. This will open up the components window with the 3
Axes.

13. So before the component could be created the P Points have to be created. For this go to Create
menu, select Point Set then Primitives & then Axial P-Point. There are type of points namely a.
Axial P-Point – this is used to give points in any of the 3 axial coordinates such as x, y & z ONLY. b.
Cartesian P-Point & c. Mixed Type P-Point – these 2 type of P-Points are used to mark points in any
other direction or coordinates other than the standard x, y & z.
14. Each P-Point should be given a number starting with 1. We should first calculate the number of
points required to make this valve. Based on that enter the parameters according to the label tags
given earlier so that you see the points appearing on the screen.
15. Depending on the direction & angle of the point, either the Axial P-Point should be used or Mixed
Type P-Point should be selected.

16. Once this is done the geometry set has to be created. For this click
on to Create menu, Geometry set & then Primitives. The following
screen appears.
17. Since most of the components of a valve are made up of cylinders,
select SCYL to start constructing the valve. On clicking it brings up
the other screen wherein you
feed the dimensions for the
cylinder.

Commands used during Catalog building

1. NEW SDTE COPY /(Prev SDTE name)- This copies the previous SDTE.
2. NEW SDTE COPY PREV - This also copies the previous SDTE.
3. Q NAME OF PREV - Displays the name of the previous SDTE. It can also be
used to rename to new CE.
4. Q RTEXT - Displays the RTEXT of the CE.
5. SAMe - Reverts to the previously used element which was the
current CE. For eg. Being in a
SCOM you go to another SCOM & want to revert back to the
Previous one.
6. Q DESGEO - This command gives a list of the current component /SCOM
if it has been used in DESIGN & in how many places.
7. Q GEODEP - This command gives a list of the current component / SCOM
If it has been included in any SPEC & if so, in which spec.
8. OWNER - Reverts to the owner of that component.
9. END - Goes down to the last component in that hierarchy.
10. FIRST - Reverts to the first element in the current CE.
11. Q EVAR (Folder Name) - this gives the location of the folder DB. Q EVAR ‘MLH000’
12. Q WORPOS - gives the world position for a component
13. Q PPCOU - Counts the no. of P-Points for a Valve/Inst/Tee/Atta.
14. Q PPLS - To know the valid P-Points
15. Q CLLEN - To know the center line length of a branch including all comp.
16. Q TULEN - To know the pipe length of a branch excluding all fittings.
17. Q PLNA - To know the valid P-Lines of a SCTN element.
18. Q POS PPLIN BOS - To know the BOS Elev of a SCTN.
19. Q POS PPLIN NA - To know the Neutral Axis Elev of a SCTN.
20. ALP REQ CLEAR - To clear the command window.
21. Q CATTEXT - To know the DTXT & MTXX of a Component together.
EVALUATE NAME FOR ALL DB WITH EXTNO GT 1 AND LOCRF OF DBLOC1 EQ CURLOC

Copying an existing element to a new name & renaming all the TEXT entries use the following steps.
1. For this purpose we are copying an existing CATE to a new one.
2. Create the new element NEW CATE /(new CATE name)
3. COPY PREV REN /(existing previous CATE) /(new CATE name)
Eg. NEW CATE /INST,BALL-ESDV,A,RF
COPY PREV REN /INST,BALL-ESDV,RF /INST,BALL-ESDV,A,RF
Once this is done select the last 2 TEXT elements which has an ending PTSE & GMSE & edit the STEXT attrib.

Including an element from one CATA to another:

1. Make the destination CATA the CE.

2. Go to Modify >> Hierarchy >> Include (this shows the CE as the new CATA)
3. In the Members list select the element that you want to include & click Include.

Creation of Cable Trays

While creating Catalogues for Cable Trays for the different components like Bends, F-Tube, Tee’s, and
Cross’s etc. we should adhere to the following.
Bends: After creating P-Points for the bend you should create 2 more extra P-Points number 30 & 31 with
their direction facing to the open end of the cable tray. 30 should be placed at P-Point 1 & 31 should be
placed at P-Point 2. PDMS searches for these 2 p-points to orientate the bend, if required.
F-Tube: The same concept as bend but in this case p-point 30 & 31 should be placed at p-point 1.
Tee: The same concept as bend but in this case p-point 30 & 31 should be placed at the center of the
Tee, i.e. at p-point 0.
Cross: The same concept as bend but in this case p-point 30 & 31 should be placed at the center of the
cross.
In case of doubt refer to SCTG spec in the Sample Project.
