WHAT IS

HEIJUNKA?

www.benchmarksixsigma.com
MEANING

Heijunka is the lean technique

of levelling production to avoid
Mura or unevenness of output.
The concept originated at
Toyota.

Heijunka Box is the most
common tool for implementing
Heijunka in the workplace. It is a
production schedule divided
into boxes (or pigeon holes),
with each box representing a
particular period and associated
production runs.

The Toyota Production System
consists of two columns –
Jidoka and Just-in-Time.
Heijunka supports both. Heijunka
involves the production and
smoothing processing using
levelling, sequencing and
standardising.

THE THREE
COMPONENTS

Levelling involves smoothing

the amount of production to cut
back variation, the trials and
troughs that may make planning
challenging. Levelling pursues
forestall ‘end-of-period’ peaks,
where production is initially slow
at the start of the month, then
again quickens within the last
days of an acquisition or
accounting period, for example.

THE THREE
COMPONENTS

Sequencing involves mixing the

styles of work processed. So, as
an example, when putting in new
loans, the loan being processed is
mixed to match customer demand
and help ensure applications are
actioned in date order. Managing
this method could also be more
accessible in manufacturing,
where a producer may hold a
small number of finished goods to
reply to the fluctuation in weekly
orders.

THE THREE
COMPONENTS

Stability is the third strand of

Heijunka. It strives to scale back
variation in how we do our work,
highlighting the importance of
‘standard work’, of following a
typical process and procedure.
This method links well to the
process management concept
and the control plan, where the
method owner continuously seeks
to search out and consistently
deploy best practices.

Concepts like Heijunka
can’t be implemented
overnight. For example,
Toyota has taken a few
years to apply to level
successfully and spread
the load. Still, it is now a
paradigm for the growing
awareness of lean-thinking
principles within the
contemporary world.
