PHY 113 / PHY 103: Introduction to Electromagnetism, (Summer 2024)

Department of Physics, I.I.T. Kanpur
Assignment - 1 ( )
1. Describe a device using which you can detect and quantitatively measure the amount of charge on an
object.

2. Consider a cow weighing about 400 kg. If the charge on an electron differed from the charge on the proton
by 1 part in 1012 , estimate the net charge on the cow. What would be the force between two such cows
standing a distance of 1m apart? You may assume the cows to be spherical for the sake of argument. Make
all necessary reasonable assumptions about the chemical composition of the cows for you to complete your
calculations.

3. Consider three equal charges of charge Q located at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side a with
the centroid at the origin on the X − Y plane. What would be the force on a charge q placed at the point
(0, 0, z). Find this force in the limit of a → 0 and interpret your result physically. Repeat your analysis if
one of the charges at the vertices of the triangle had charge Q and the other two had charge −Q/2.

4. Two identical charges of strength q are fixed at a distance of a. Will a negative charge of strength −Q
placed exactly at the middle between the two charges execute simple harmonic motion: (1) Along the
line joining the two charges; (2) Perpendicular to the line joining the two charges ? If so, calculate the
frequency of oscillation.

5. Consider the vector 4x̂ + 5ŷ + 6ẑ. Write down

(i) the components of this vector in a new coordinate frame whose x′ − −y ′ are rotated to the old x − −y
axes by 30◦ .
(ii) (i) the components of this vector in a new coordinate frame whose y ′ − −z ′ are rotated to the old
y − −z axes by 60◦ .

6. Make a 3D plot of the function below of two variables:

x2 + 2y 2
f (x, y) = exp{− }.
2

7. Consider the function

3x2 + 4y 2 − 4xy + 18x − 28y + 5
f (x, y) = exp{− }.
60
Find the point at which this function attains its maximum. What is the maximum value? What is the
maximum slope at the point (2, 2) and the direction of this steepest ascent?

8. On a hot summer’s afternoon, the air rarifies in the vicinity of a hot road producing refractive effects such
as that of a mirage. The refractive index of the air near the land surface varies with height z approximately
as
n(z) = n0 − n1 e−αz .

Determine the gradient of the refractive index and the constant refractive index surfaces.
9. Given the vector field ⃗v = (3y 2 + 2xz 3 )x̂ + (6xy + 3z 2 )ŷ + (6yz + 3x2 z 2 )ẑ, compuote the line integral of
this function between the corners of the unit cube (0,0,0) and (1,1,1) along two paths: one directly along
the diagonal, and another path that goes along the edges of the cube.

f⃗0 · d⃗s where f⃗0 = ẑ is a constant vector and S is the upper half of
R
10. Find the surface integral S

a) the Hemisphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 = a2 for z > 0.

x2 y2 z2
b) the ellipsoid a2 + a2 + b2 = 1 for z > 0.

11. Find the divegence and curl of the following vector functions

F⃗ = x2 yx̂ − (z 3 − 3x)ŷ + 4y 2 ẑ (1)

1
⃗v = (3x + 2z 2 )x̂ + x3 y 2 ŷ − (z − 7x2 )ẑ. (2)

12. A vector field is given by 

x̂)
∀ x2 + y 2 > r02
x +y
⃗v (x, y) = (3)
ω0 r2 (xŷ − yx̂) ∀

x2 + y 2 < r02
0

Obtain the divergence and curl of this field everywhere. Discuss the result as r0 → 0 and ω0 → ∞
simultaneously while keeping r0 ω02 = constant.

13. Determine if the following fields are conservative:

⃗v = 6xx̂ − (2y − y 2 )ŷ + (6z − x3 )ẑ (4)

3x2 y x3 2x3 y
⃗v = (4y 2 + 2 )x̂ + (8xy + 2 )ŷ − (11 − 3 )ẑ. (5)

⃗ = A0 ẑ, which is constant within a cube of side a and centered at the origin.
14. Consider a vector field A
The vector field is zero outside the cube. Find the Divergence and Curl of this vector field everywhere in
space.

⃗ = A0 ẑ, which is constant within the volume of a sphere of radius a and zero
