Component Parts of Manual
Transmission
INTRODUCTION
There are several components
which make up the manual transmission
system. Each one of them is crucial for
the gearing shifting and clutch releasing
abilities to take place. If one of these
components malfunction, then you won’t
be able to drive smoothly.
Basic Component
Parts
of
Manual Transmission
1. Input Shaft

The input shaft (also called the clutch

shaft) extends from the front of the
transmission and carries drive from the
clutch disc into the transmission. The input
shaft has one gear on its end, the main
drive gear (4th driven speed gear), which
is an integral part of the input shaft.
2. Ball Bearing

A ball bearing is a type of rolling-

element bearing that uses balls to
maintain the separation between the
bearing races. And also it helps the
shafting to rotate smoothly.
3. Driver Speed Gear

It drives the synchronizer assembly, if

the synchronizer assembly is being shifted
to its desire speed gear either low/high
gear.
1st / 2nd / 3rd & 5th Driven speed gears
Reverse speed gear
Main-drive / 4th speed gear
4. Counter Gear

It drives all the driven speed gear and

also the reverse idler gear when it’s shifted
and engaged to reverse state.
5. Constant Gear

It drives all the counter gears and also

it is driven by the main-drive/4th speed
gear.
Main-drive / 4th speed gear
6. Stick Bearing

It is a rolling stick-like bearing that

provide smoothly rotation of all driven
speed gears and counter gears.
7. Shaft Bushing

It helps the transmission’s shafting to

prevent metal to metal friction.
8. Pilot Bearing

It supports and centers the transmission

input shaft and clutch disc. When the
clutch is disengaged, the pilot bearing
allows the flywheel to maintain engine
RPM while the input shaft is slowing down
and stopping.
9. Synchronizer Assembly

During gear shifting, the gears

themselves are not moved. The gears are
locked to the shaft by synchronizer action.
Synchronizers are connecting devices that
are splined to the output shaft and rotate
with it.
Parts of
Synchronizer
Assembly
A. Synchronizer Cone

It is a bracket shafting of synchronizer

ring where it is built-in to the driven speed
gears.
B. Synchronizer Ring

It also called blocking ring, balk ring or

friction ring, has a conical surface which
comes into contact with the friction cone
of the gear wheel. The purpose of the
synchronizer ring is to produce friction
torque in order to decelerate/accelerate
the input shaft during a gearshift.
C. Synchronizer Key

It pushes a synchronizer ring due to the

movement of the synchronizer sleeve.
D. Synchronizer Key Springs

They are placed on each side of the

synchronizer hub and are meant to keep
the strut keys in the designated grooves. It
also the interlock device to lock the
synchronizer sleeve move and prevent
double engagement.
E. Synchronizer Sleeve

It also called gearshift sleeve or coupling

sleeve, has a radial groove on the external
side for the gears shift fork. The interior has
splines that are in constant mesh with the
external splines of the synchronizer hub. The
sliding sleeve can only move on the axial
direction (left-right), from a neutral position to
an engaged position.
F. Synchronizer Hub

It is mounted on the output shaft, rigidly

connected by a spline. It can move on
the axial direction but it cannot rotate
relative to the shaft. It contains specific
grooves which will contain the locking
elements.
10. Shift Fork

It is a fork-like which holds and move

(left or right) the synchronizer sleeve to its
desire speed gear. It also attach to the
shift rail.
11. Shift Rail

The shift rails typically have an axially

centered neutral position and are
moveable in a first and possibly a second
axial direction to engage a selected gear.
12. Detent Ball and Spring

It is an interlock device of shift rail

which prevent double engagement of
gears.
13. Reverse Idler Gear

A reverse idler gear is used in

automobile manual transmissions to
reverse the normal direction of rotation of
the main or output shaft so that the
automobile can be moved backward.
14. Output Shaft

An output shaft connects the drive wheels

to the automatic gearbox in your vehicle. The
output shaft is the component that carries the
power out of the transmission to the wheels.
Depending on the speed you select and the
gear that the automatic transmission sets, the
output shaft will turn at the speed you
determine.
15. Transmission Oil Seal

It helps to seal and protect from oil

leaking/spilling.
16. Bell Housing

Bell housing or bellhousing is a

colloquial/slang term for the portion of the
transmission that covers the flywheel and
the clutch or torque converter of the
transmission on vehicles powered by
internal combustion engines.
17. Transmission Housing

It is a gearbox housing which includes

the driven and driver gears
18. Extension Housing

It is a housing of shifting assembly of

transmission.
19. Fill Hole

It is a hole which refills the lubricating

oil and also a level indicator.
20. Drain Hole

It is a hole which drains the used

lubricating oil.
21. Speedometer Sensor

Transmission speed sensors are used to

calculate the actual gear ratio of the
transmission while in use.
22. Shift Lever

It is called gear lever (both UK English),

gearshift or shifter (both U.S. English) is a
metal lever attached to the shift assembly
like shift rail and fork which located in an
automobile transmission.
